Why did Trinity and Cypher originally plan to kill Neo?

Posted by hutber

We hear in the very first scene that Trinity and Cypher had originally planned to kill Neo, at least thats how I read: >**CYPHER (V.O.)** We're going to kill him. Do you understand that? He's going to die just like the others. **TRINITY (V.O.)** Morpheus believes he is the One. **CYPHER (V.O.)** Do you? **TRINITY (V.O.)** I... it doesn't matter what I believe. So had they really original planned to kill Neo and go behind Morpheus's back and then Trinity after watching Neo fell in love with him? I thought at first this was just Cypher saying he will die by being brought out, like others. But with us knowing that he informs the agents about Neo and fully intended to have him killed.

He means “we’re going to get him killed.” They’d tried it before and those people died.

A earlier draft of the script had Cypher tell Neo that Morpheus had thought he had found The One before Neo....5 times in fact.  And each of those individuals were killed by Agents.

Extracting an adult is dangerous. They weren't planning to kill him, it just might have happened when they pulled him out.

I don't think they were going to murder him. What they meant was that there was a high chance of Neo getting killed somewhere along the line. Probably from the agents.

The were not planning to kill him. They were acknowledging the danger they were introducing into his life.

I see headlines about literacy and comprehension being at an all time low and want to chalk them up as sensationalized click bait bullshit then I see posts like this

For real, when it comes to misunderstanding a movie, this is one of the worst offenders of all time, and I've been on the internet for more than two decades now.

I mean to be fair this is a really basic example of implication. What neo might go through will probably end with his death. A child could watch that scene and understand what is being conveyed

A child did watch that scene and understand that 🙋‍♂️ There was a lot about matrix i didnt understand back then. But not once did I ever think trinity and cypher were out to get neo

They didn’t think he would survive the extraction process.

I love the fact the movie never explains how the other potential Ones died.

Killed by agents one would assume. Morpheus pretty much says it.

Yeah, exactly. He says everyone who has stood their ground against an agent has died.

I assumed he meant the standard humans. Wow I love how a 27 year old movie still has surprises at least for me :)

Yeah, I know what you mean. The first Matrix film was one of the first movies that I felt required multiple viewings to really appreciate fully.

I always interpreted it as that they were afraid they were going to kill him if they tried, but Morpheus believes that as he's The One, he'll survive the extraction process.
