Why do only actors do press meets? Why not directors?

Posted by Miss_India5

I was caught up with the latest press meets of the movie - the drama. It’s fantastic of course. But I have a doubt - why do only actors do it? why don’t directors go for these? At first I assumed that - actors are the faces of the movie just like how brands have brand ambassadors and it makes sense for them to be the ones promoting the movie. But what about famous directors like Christopher Nolan? I’m not talking about premiers. Specifically talk shows like Jimmy Kimmel, that french show with good lighting, interviews at the cut/vogue etc.. Do enlighten me.

Because most people aren't cinephiles and don't take that much notice of directors.

Actors are the face of the movie. If it's what people connect with. There's more of a celebrity status around them. So they're the ones sent out to sell the movie.

Talk shows do sometimes book directors. But talk shows only book guests their audiences will be interested in, so they don't book most directors.

The actors are far more used to that side of the camera, have charisma and a direct connection to screentime. It works better.

A quick Google search shows that Christopher Nolan did appear on the Late Show in 2024, promoting Oppenhiemer. Your initial impression is correct, actors do most of the press meets since they are the public face of the movie and the ones most likely to draw viewers to watch the talk show. However, popular directors DO sometimes make appearances.

Vast majority of people couldn’t name more than one or two directors. It’s an actor’s job.

Possibly because outside of Spielberg the director is not the known quantity that the general public are aware of. I'm sure Spielberg, Scorsese and a few others may be known enough to appear on talk shows

I've wondered this too, especially with the rise of all those beautifully shot YouTube interviews—the ones with the warm lighting and the intimate set design. They feel like they should be spaces for directors to talk about vision and process, but instead they've become an extension of celebrity fashion coverage. I think part of it is simply that those outlets know what gets clicks. An interview with Zendaya or Robert Pattinson will pull in millions; a conversation with a director, no matter how brilliant, is seen as niche. It's a shame, because some of the best conversations about film happen when directors are given that same platform.

Most people don't care about directors. Directors do loads of press, but it tends to be specific print/podcast/video outlets rather than the stuff you're talking about. However name directors like Nolan, Del Toro etc have done talk shows. Del Toro was on Kimmel just 4 months ago promoting Frankenstein. TV but Vince Gilligan was on a few late night shows right at the end of Breaking Bad when it blew up.

It's all about the star power, my friend. People are more interested in seeing actors on talk shows because they are the ones who bring in the audience. But don't underestimate the power of a good director interview, they can be just as entertaining and informative. Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate Christopher Nolan's interviews? That man is a genius both behind the camera and in front of a talk show host!

More famous directors sometimes do go to talk shows. For example, here is Villeneuve with Fallon: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwuDF9E3je0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwuDF9E3je0)

I've been really impressed lately with all the press that Andy Weir (book author) has been getting for Project Hail Mary, and also Ray Porter who narrated the audio book. It's rare for the book author to get this much press, let alone the narrator. But that shows just how big a phenomenon the book/movie have been.

Good question. Directors absolutely do press, but the studio pushes actors because theyre the face of the movie. Its easier to market a star than a director to general audiences.

Sometimes directors don’t want the spotlight as much as actors do.

If you mean press junkets or any interviews at all with the media, directors do them for just about every movie. They might not be on national TV, but they will be on online venues. For national talk shows like Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, and Meyers, in the last few years I have watched Aronofsky, del Toro, Villeneuve, Gunn, Scorsese, Joachim Trier, Edgar Wright, Paul Thomas Anderson, and several others that aren't coming to mind, on those shows.

Why aren’t directors on the movie posters? Same answer.
