Why do some people like to mod their cars to be as loud as possible?

Posted by w1nt3rolymp1cs

This is a genuine question, as I’ve never understood the appeal of it. Is it just for attention or what? Maybe someone who’s more into cars can explain it to me.

There's an episode of South Park called "The F Word" that indirectly covers this.

I think we all know the reason, but the community is for "positive discussions ".

It depends on the person. Some do it to show off or be obnoxious, but I think most genuinely just enjoy the sound.

Scoth42 Mar 29, 2026 +41
I can accept that some people genuinely enjoy the sound but it can still make them a jerk if it's so loud as to be intrusive. There was about six months a kid across the street had a straight piped Civic and he left for work or something every morning at about 5AM and always revved it high on the way out of the neighborhood. I know at least one of the neighbors made a noise complaint but nothing came of it. He eventually wrecked it. I feel the same about loud music, speaker phones in public, etc. Even if you don't intend to be obnoxious there's still a responsibility not to be overly intrusive. And I say that as someone who has pretty much always driven sports cars and currently has a project car with a crappy old muffler that's annoyingly loud at higher revs, so on the rare occasions I drive it I try to keep the revs down in my neighborhood

birdseye-maple Mar 29, 2026 +9
Straight piping is a different story, that's always an a****** move. Minor mods that increase volume is one thing, straight piping is anti-social. I do think though with reasonable modded exhausts, there should also be a time and place for opening it up.

Horror-Food69420 Mar 30, 2026 +3
It always seems like people with loud cars go to work really early, and let their car warm-up for 40 minutes.

gave you a thumbs up f the simple "he eventually wrecked it" comment... lol

To comment on loud music, IMO there’s nothing better than a perfectly clean, tuned car audio system. Not big and bass heavy, but all quality speakers, proper bass levels, and you can play it at the same volume you would a normal system, but the mids and some bass shine so much brighter while the treble/ highs aren’t louder, but cleaner, and for some reason being in the small car just makes everything sound so much more immersive. Add windows down, summer night along a beach road, cigar in hand, sun roof open, my goodness !
1
Scoth42 Mar 29, 2026 +8
Yeah, that's fair, that sounds glorious (minus the cigar since I don't smoke). I'm talking more the people with the bass thumpers who leave them on at the gas station or such and they're so loud you can't hear the person next to you talking and you have to fix your car mirrors from them getting rattled. I've done similar in the MR2 with the t-tops off on a warm summer day and it's glorious, though the sound system is in drastic need of work. It has other things that need work first
8
octopuswildernesscat Mar 29, 2026 +4
Haha agreed. Those people get tinitus after a year. I keep my DB around 90 max which is what my stock system used to go to as well, but now the music sounds soooo much better, I literally have an app that gives me a notification when I’m cranking too loud for too long. I crank it once in a while with windows down on highway but that’s it. I prob could have saved 1k and gotten a mid range setup but I spend $3k and have the best cleanest setup I’ve ever heard.
4
w1nt3rolymp1cs Mar 29, 2026 +4
Dude, you know when someone drives by you and you can literally only hear nothing but the bass + the vibrations from the frame of their car shaking. Like bro I KNOW your ears gotta be hurting
4
Krypt0night Mar 29, 2026 +7
Sure but that's not what people are referring to. It's the people who blast their music around their home where other people might live nearby, especially in apartment complexes.
7
octopuswildernesscat Mar 29, 2026 +1
Yeah they’ll get ear damage very fast don’t worry lol
1
InternalFig1 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Which only makes them louder.

BakingBrowniesAllDay Mar 29, 2026 +4
I completely feel what you're saying. My favorite sensory memory is driving in the desert one summer night playing Tears for Fears' Everybody Wants To Rule The World with the windows down and wind as warm as bath water in my hair. To this day, when I hear the opening notes, I'm transported back to that night. But. You're still a member of a community where ramming your joy down someone else's throat is pretty rude. That's the original point. I didn't have nearly the sweet setup you described in my Miata but I still cranked it up while I was driving. I'd also turn down the volume at red lights.

I think that, and gas powered mini-bikes that some kids ride around where I live, are extremely rude and downright agony to be forced to hear. Agony. Usually, I love life.
13
w1nt3rolymp1cs Mar 29, 2026 +5
Oh God theres a few kids that have those where I live too. At least they mostly just ride around during the day though

Vehicles are quiet because car manufacturers have to baffle the exhaust noise to pass emissions restrictions and noise restrictions. Think a long pipe from the engine to the exhaust in the back of the vehicle, but instead of being a straight pipe, there’s a bunch of bends, loops, and kinks in it + there’s a bunch of material in it literally blocking air from coming out. These baffle techniques significantly hinder the vehicles performance (just for an example, there’s a motorcycle sold in the USA that has 50hp, but when you swap the exhaust and flash it, it has 75hp - that’s a huge gain for just changing an exhaust, but that’s how much they hinder the vehicle). By removing these baffles, the engine performs a lot better, but it also makes a lot more noise. Now obviously there are levels to this, with some aftermarket exhaust set ups being quieter than others. But people like hearing their engine when they’re speeding down the road. It’s also a signal that you built your car out and it’s no longer stock. So yeah the performance benefits + the coolness factor (to some, I know not everyone enjoys it) = loud vehicles. Now there is a point where the noise becomes obnoxious and unnecessary, like those straight piped Honda civics that break the sound barrier when going 10mph lol
2
Umikaloo Mar 30, 2026 +1
The mini-bikes are loud because they use 2-stroke engines, which rev much higher than 4-strokes, and likely don't have much in terms of muffling.
1
ailish Mar 29, 2026 +5
My f****** neighbor does this. I don't care what people do to their cars, but he'll sit in our shared driveway listening to music in his car with the volume and the bass up super loud. It fills my whole house. I've asked him not to do this because it gives me a migraine, and he'll always be apologetic, but then he does it again a few days later. It's so frustrating.
5
raddishes_united Mar 29, 2026 +5
There was a study about sound in society that (iirc) said, basically, that in dense societies being loud means standing out of the crowd, being noticed. As people climb the socio-economic ladder then silence/quiet stats to matter more because it is achievable.
5
w1nt3rolymp1cs Mar 29, 2026 +2
That’s very interesting. Honestly the building I live in is a “luxury” apartment but there are some Other neighborhoods around it that are slightly more lower-class. There are often loud muscle cars or motorcycles driving down the neighboring streets at all times of the day/night. There might just be some validity to that study.
2
changelingcd Mar 29, 2026 +9
Apparently there's an entire subculture built around it, along with the "noise equals safety" stuff. Just read the comments here about loving the sound of their engines: I have to force myself to believe they're serious, so we're obviously coming from wildly different viewpoints.
9
WordNo1925 Mar 29, 2026 +10
I’m convinced that a large population of these individuals have not progressed much past adolescence.
10
SubjectC Mar 29, 2026 +2
Its people who feel unseen in their lives, so they subconsciously gravitate toward things that make them loud and visible. I dont think they even realize they are doing it, but I've always thought that the reason behind this stuff is pretty obvious. I bet if these peoples lives got better and they had a solid support system and community, they wouldn't feel the need to shove their car through everyone's life.
2
kp3000k Mar 30, 2026 +1
to be fair that statement is completely true when you are talking about motorcycle, its easy to not see it but not hearing it with a race exhaust is not possible which can safe someone from a crash
1
milkyjoe241 Mar 29, 2026 +23
There's a primal urge in some people to be loud to attract mates. If there's deadly animals around you make loud noise to declare your territory. Then any rival or predator in the area knows you're there and you have extra energy to fight. Mix that with cars as a status symbol where males attract mates via resource collection and display and its all just a modern tweak of our primal mating strategies
23
blu3tu3sday Mar 29, 2026 +24
The only people who care about how loud or modified your car is, are men. So yeah, it will attract a certain type of mate alright 😂
24
YourUncleBuck Mar 29, 2026 +3
This is why I stopped caring about cars, because it only attracts other dudes, lol. Classic cars attract old dudes and Japanese cars attract Hispanic dudes.

blu3tu3sday Mar 29, 2026 +3

3

2
connielizbeth Mar 29, 2026 +3
The only mates attractable in that case are deaf women. How on earth could any hearing woman go anywhere near step one with that. I myself am not deaf, but I have known deaf people, and there are a few conveniences that come along with being deaf. And that’s one of them.
3
milkyjoe241 Mar 29, 2026 +4
I think some people are taking my comment too literally. People don't often make decisions knowing the underlying biology behind it. As well as if our brains were wired to do something and expect one result 5000 years ago, that doesn't mean that same brain wiring hasn't adapted to our modern environment to expect a different result.
4
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 +3
I can confidently say this has nothing to do with it for me. I'm abundantly aware the vast majority of girls do NOT like a loud vehicle, so if anything my tastes repel females, not attract them. 😅 I do know that a lot of men don't understand that and truly do think a woman will like it as much as they do. In reality they're more likely to attract other dudes with it than women. I like my vehicles to be loud because I love to hear my engine. I'm very mechanically minded and love cars and engines in general. A finely tuned and audible exhaust note appeals to me like a person's favorite song would appeal to them. There's also the satisfying instant feedback of more throttle = more sound. I liken that to the same sort of enjoyment someone gets from playing a musical instrument.
3
possiblycrazy79 Mar 29, 2026 +15
I really appreciate your honest answer. I don't want to say too much but it's so interesting that a sound that is actually abhorrent & torturous to me, can sound like music to you. The human brain is truly wondrous
15
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 +1
Yeah, different tastes from different people is part of what makes this world interesting. I understand it's not for everyone, and that's OK. Although I love some aspects of almost all genres of music, reggaeton is like nails on a chalkboard to me... actually I think nails on a chalkboard sound better lol. But hey, some folks love it and I'm happy for them. No judgment here. Just as you appreciate my honest answer, I apprecuate your being respectful about it. ☺️
1
Krypt0night Mar 29, 2026 +7
The difference is nobody is forcing you to listen to reggae often or daily but you're forcing everyone else to listen to your obnoxious car when the vast majority of people hate it. So really not a fair comparison whatsoever.
7
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 -4
How about when I'm in someone's car and they want to listen to reggaeton? I still allow them to enjoy it whether I do or not. Maybe you could learn something from that.
-4
Public-Temperature-1 Mar 29, 2026 +4
If you like it loud that's fine, but ripping it along public roads is forcing everyone else to put up with it. There are a lot of people who really do not like loud noises. When it's done on public roads there really is no escaping it, and that seems unfair and inconsiderate. Do you have a response to that?
4
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 +6
I think people are mistaking my liking of hearing my engine for liking my car to be obnoxiously deafening. There's sound levels more reasonable than that, that still allow me to enjoy what I enjoy. If it's loud enough people can hear it from inside their house with the windows closed, that's far too loud. If it's waking people up at night, that's both too loud and very inconsiderate. If you can't hear your music in your car because my car is simply idling next to you, that's also too loud. I like to hear my engine, but I don't like to disturb others peace. There's a reasonable middle ground.
6
Public-Temperature-1 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Yes that's fair. My son is autistic (doesn't like unexpected loud stuff) and I hate the obnoxiously loud ones with a passion that I didn't think I had. It's like they are going round deliberately upsetting people and then buzzing away in their 1.2l shitbox.
2
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 +2
I get it. I live across the road from a biker bar and while I love hearing a healthy V-twin, some guys leaving the bar with open pipes and wide open throttle gets to be too much. If I can't even hear my damn TV over the sound of your bike/car, then you need to chill. I tend to like noise a little more than a lot of people, but there's still a line. Also note that when I say I like the sound of an engine, it also has to actually sound *good*. "Loud" and "good" are not necessarily the same. A lot of the time the really, really loud vehicles have little to no exhaust on them, and it's very rare that those actually sound good. A good performance exhaust keeps the sound reasonable but also lets the driver enjoy it. The really brutal ones to me are when they're so loud you can't even talk when you're inside the car. That's just way too god damn much and it gets old for me almost immediately.
2
GingerMaus Mar 29, 2026 +2
Lol making this guy answer for the entire boy racer community. The simple answer is that people with straight through pipes are obnoxious and inconsiderate. People who add track exhausts so their own sound systems can't be heard over them, also obnoxious. Lots of them think it makes them look cool. Some of us up the volume a little bit because we like the sound of our engines. Or because the standard exhaust adds to drone. Do also bear in mind that not everyone with a modified exhaust is also ripping it everywhere. Older members of the car community generally try to keep it respectful.
2
mynameajeff69 Mar 30, 2026 +1
The thing is if a car is extremely loud at all times even within your community you're an a******. If you have a vehicle that is somewhat loud and not bothering people in the neighborhood but loud on the freeway that's totally fine. It depends on the person, the car, the loudness, etc. It is very difficult to make a blanket statement, but most people are fine and there are some who are not respecting their neighbors.
1
Electronic-Jello-640 Mar 29, 2026 +7
But..... Literally no one wants to hear it
7
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 +4
That's where you're wrong. ALL car guys love to hear it sometimes. I can't tell you how many times I've been complimented on how my vehicles sound, not to mention how many times I've complimented others. Don't pretend to speak for everyone just because you feel a certain way. More than once I've literally had people try to buy my vehicle at a stoplight and at gas stations because they loved the look and sound so much
4
_Hans_Solo_ Mar 29, 2026 +3
Seems like you’re getting hammered for answering the question honestly, which is classic Listnook. To confirm, I modify my cars for the same reason you do. Working on and driving cars is a passion for me, and the noises are part of that and exhilarating. It’s not just exhaust - compressor surge, turbo spool, supercharger whine? Yes please. And this is definitely reinforced by others with the same passion/hobby. We love seeing and hearing other nice cars.
3
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 +1
THANK YOU. The point about the turbo is also a good one. I have a 6spd 7.3L Powerstroke and hearing that turbo scream as RPMs climb, only to be punctuated by the blowoff valve when I shift... so f****** awesome. 🥵😅

To me hearing a person’s engine like that is not exactly equivalent, but in the same category as being stabbed. Or being shot or being tortured because it isn’t just a quick “pow,” no. It tends to go on and on, sort of like getting your fingers cut off one by one. It’s extremely difficult for me to believe that you have not heard this before. I say this with all due respect.
7
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 +5
Oh I've heard it before. The thread was about why someone might like it though, not why someone might not like it. I totally get some folks don't like it, and they have every right to their own tastes and opinions. Not everyone likes what I like. No judgment there. I was just saying why I do. Different strokes for different folks
5
milkyjoe241 Mar 29, 2026 +2
I would say just because the behavior is linked to earlier mating behaviors doesn't mean it works. And that doesn't mean that's the only value people get from it.
2
budstudly Mar 29, 2026 +3
Oh, I've no doubt thats the reason some guys do it, whether it works or not. I know personally I misguidedly thought the same thing as a younger guy til I realized what I and other young men think is cool is very often not at all what women think is cool. I was just making the point that that's not the sole reason someone might enjoy it, and that's not at all the reason (anymore) that I enjoy it. Kinda lame getting downvoted just for making an adjacent point, but then again this is Listnook so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
3
Wetald Mar 30, 2026 +1
I feel much the same way, but it generally has to be the deep, bass rumble of a diesel. I’ve got an old John Deere 4650 that when I start with the door open I feel more than I hear. I don’t know how else to explain it other than it buffets the air in your lungs. On the other hand, not much annoys me faster than a car or motorcycle with a tinny sounding exhaust where the sound cracks and pops when it’s revved. People are weird, and I’ve definitely got my quirks.

I liken that to the same sort of enjoyment someone gets from playing a musical instrument. To me it's like I'm making the machinery sing. That being said, theres a time and place. I have a loud ass Harley that I love to hear as well (I know, I know) but when I worked 2nd shift and was getting home at 2am, I was often either idling into my driveway, or sometimes I even shut the engine off and coasted so I wouldn't bother the neighbors. IMO you're not a d*** for liking a loud vehicle, but you're definitely a d*** when you think everyone wants to be woken up by it in the middle of the night.

There is research on this. They do this because they get pleasure from making other people suffer. Cruelty makes weak people feel strong. [A desire for a loud car with a modified muffler is predicted by being a man and higher scores on psychopathy and sadism](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10699294/)
30
birdseye-maple Mar 29, 2026 +14
That's not what the study says. It was 529 participants in a survey, and on average the loud muffler folks scored 29% higher on dark triad personality traits. That doesn't mean all of them or even a majority, and you inserted your own conclusion.
14
BoringBob84 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Are you suggesting that the methodology is flawed - that the sample was not representative of the general public or that they were intentionally lying on the survey? Did you read to this part: > Participants also completed the Short Dark Tetrad (SD4; Paulhus et al., 2021). If so, please present your research to substantiate your counter-argument?
1
Equal_Actuator_3777 Mar 29, 2026 +6
Wow… what an insanely disingenuous way to interpret that. That’s not even close to the meaning.
6
BoringBob84 Mar 30, 2026 +2
> RESULTS > Using linear regression, the car aggregate was predicted by being a man and having higher scores on psychopathy and sadism, with the model accounting for approximately 29% of the variance. What part of that is "insanely disingenuous," and what evidence do you have to support that counter-argument?

Not relevant to the 4 cylinders with the tin can exhaust. I can appreciate a muscle car with a great sounding exhaust but the little wind up cars are awful.

There's different levels to this. Some people install custom mufflers on their cars or replace the pipes with stainless steel ones in order to enhance the sound and make the driving experience more enjoyable. This usually makes the car a little louder and gives it a sportier tone. Some people install full on custom exhausts on performance builds in order to gain a few horsepower. The people you're thinking of do full on resonator and muffler deletes because they think that loud = cool. Not only does straight piping the car make it impossibly loud and increase emissions, you are also effectively losing power because exhaust gases are flowing more freely than they should. It's also common to pair this straight pipe exhaust with a popcorn/crackle tune, which makes the engine intentionally misfire when decelerating, getting unburnt fuel into the exhaust which then ignites due to the gases' heat. This mod further weakens performance and is slowly destroying the engine by putting extra strain into the components and getting gasoline into the engine oil.

I used to work in the car business, anytime we were appraising a customer's car that was "souped-up" with a loud exhaust, or a lift kit, ground effects, etc. we privately said the customer had the "compensater package" on their vehicle.

when i was a car guy my goal was never to make my car loud, just fast. if i could have increased my power without making it louder that would have been fine. loudness comes with removing restrictions in the exhaust system so it’s kind of inevitable. i think a lot of people purposefully make their car louder so it has the appearance of high performance, without necessarily making it actually high performance.

2
Dizzy_Veterinarian12 Mar 29, 2026 +2
The technical answer is that less muffler/catalytic converter/things to make it quieter, the easier and more efficient it is for exhaust to exit the car. If it’s easier to get exhaust out, it can often be easier to combust new fuel/air and make more power. The more common answer is they don’t care about that and their cars aren’t tuned for it, they’re just dicks.

Entirely depends on the person you're talking about. If it's an enthusiast who has spent a good chunk of money on their vehicle making it look however they want, upgrading for performance etc. Then you're dealing with someone who considers their vehicle a form of art. That artwork also includes the sound. Just like you may like going to a loud music concert. You go because you like the sound being produced and you like the performance being but on. The body work is the performance and the noise coming from their exhaust is the music. Pissing people off is an unfortunate by product for these people. And you'll often find they try to be as reasonable as possible, like only riding later in the day and coming home early in the evening to avoid being a nuisance as much as possible. Then you get the clapped out shit cars where they just slap a loud exhaust on that sounds like shit because they either like to tinker with shit or just want to show off for their mates. Then you have the inbetweeners. The people with money and nice cars and thrive on attention. Good or bad, if people are looking they're getting attention, it doesn't matter to them. So really, it's a mix. I'm a lover of a nice sounding loud vehicle that's had time and effort and thought put into it. But I'm a hater of those that do it for nothing but pure attention or those who don't care about the notes coming out, they just want loud.

Because they enjoy the sound of the engine. I had two trucks that had the exhaust cut off just after the cat. I loved the sound of it. The V8 sounded better than the I5 but both were enjoyable. The addition of driving on remote dirt or gravel roads and swinging the ass end around turns was so much fun. I drive a much quieter economy car now, but still miss being a young guy stomping the gas and listening to the sound and feeling the vibration as I speed up.
4
newtonreddits Mar 29, 2026 +3
I also have a V8 with an exhaust. It's nowhere near as loud as the obnoxious dickheads that do it just to be an ass.
3
w1nt3rolymp1cs Mar 29, 2026 +5
When you describe it like that I cant lie it does sound pretty fun/cool. I live in a suburban area so it probably wouldnt hit the same as being on the dirt roads going 100+ feeling the rush of it all
5

100+ on dirt roads? Yeah you're definitely a city person 😂
4
w1nt3rolymp1cs Mar 29, 2026 +2
Lol i’ve lived in the city my whole life bro idk. I’ve also never driven my car on a dirt road either. How fast do people go on dirt roads??
2
blu3tu3sday Mar 29, 2026 +4
Well they have much poorer grip, generally rocks and very uneven surface. When I used to go driving mountain roads, I'd do up to 40 if the road was good enough, in bad patches it was down to 20. On a relatively smooth dirt road like a driveway or something, personally wouldn't go over 50 or 60.

There are modified cars near me (suburban area), and it is quite annoying, and I figured that was the point. They don't drive excessively fast, which I suppose is a responsible thing.

Having a big engine with a great muffler, or just great pipes, listening to that vehicle slowly rumble by…… What a great sound. I used to live on a harbour. In fishing season, the boats would fire up those big Cat engines, idle for a bit, then slowly motor away….. It was like a bunch of tigers purring.

6
mrdungbeetle Mar 29, 2026 +8
The vast majority of cars with as-loud-as-possible exhausts are 4-cylinder shitboxes that *don't* actually sound good. And the fake pops and bangs don't make it any better.
8
birdseye-maple Mar 29, 2026 +6
It really depends, some people make the car a little louder and mind neighborhoods to not be irritating and open it up on a backroad. Others are total jerks that straight pipe it and just floor it everywhere. They are different.
6
mrdungbeetle Mar 29, 2026 +3
I have 3 cars with sports exhausts but I can turn them all off when in a residential neighborhood. Even when the valve is open, they're still going through at least one muffler, so it is actually a nice sound. People who make their cars "as loud as possible" (OP's words) are almost always straight-piping with no on/off switch. There's a guy who drives up and down my road with an old straight-piped Civic (and the wheels have a 45-degree camber just to complete the picture.) I too do not understand why anyone does this.
3

Not only do people do it, but manufacturers add it too. My 911's factory sport exhaust has them. Its telling that when you put it on Sport+ (highest performance mode) they go away.

I think there's a few different types of people that do this and it's not always for the same reasons. Some people, as you say, do it just to make their car noisy for the sake of being anti-social. Or another group who make it louder because they have an engine that does sound great, like a V8, Flat Four, Rotary or whatever. Or another group that are doing it for performance reasons, turbocharged petrol and diesel cars can have very large performance increases with minor intake and exhaust mods to increase gas flow plus a remap, with the side effect of drastically increased noise. I personally love the sound of engines, but I can't stand artificial "Pop and Bang" maps. I'm all for proper anti-lag set ups, launch control or the occasional flame on overrun but making a 1.0 Ecoboost sound like a night out in Baghdad is not the one
1
lucc1111 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Loud as in, just annoying? Or are you including the loud sound a racecar makes?
1
FloatyghostJM1 Mar 29, 2026 +1
My car is a little louder than average street traffic (about 10% louder than stock), but I’m very mindful when driving in low gears through residential areas. I like my car’s sound where it is, but I think it can get addictive to make your car louder and louder with no mind to how annoying it is for others. Some people do it for their own enjoyment, and some want attention, just like anything else.
1
crook888 Mar 29, 2026 +1
they think its cool. i don't understand the high pitched ones, they're so grating. i love a deep rumble. i just saw a Type R with a sweet, low rumble 😍😍. oof 😍. the car community has its niches. my civic is stock and happens to have a loud-ish engine. it has been annoying sometimes, because people seem to think im showing off. so I'd assume people who Intend to make their cars louder want to "show off"

8008ytrap Mar 29, 2026 +1
Puursonally (heh) I do I enjoy the sound of a well tuned engine with a well tuned exhaust. I like hearing the things do their thing. Super ridiculous popping bullshit should be saved for the track but a nice V8 with a bit of throaty tones is awesome.
1
IWuzTheWalrus Mar 29, 2026 +1
I did a mod somewhat like that on my old Mustang. Aside from liking the sound, it gave me 10% more horsepower. Note that I did not run it with no mufflers. I put in an H pipe and Flowmasters, so it was louder, but not "wake the neighborhood" loud. Might have forgotten to put the cats back in too.

Believe it or not but people get pleasure from different things. Some quiet. Some loud. Some big. Some small.
1
BarnBuiltBeaters Mar 29, 2026 +1
Automotive enthusiast here. Personally I love the sound of my vehicle. That being said there is being too loud, though my definition is probably further out than yours. Not all exhausts sound good, nor do all engines sound good either. For a daily driven vehicle its nice to hear a rumble, for your project car I like it pretty loud. Some may claim you get better power with a free flowing (loud) exhaust which is true but for most vehicles you probably would never notice the difference. Personally when my project vehicle ran, I tried to be as polite as possible by not starting it up at 5 in the morning or if I got back late, I would try to coast into the neighborhood at idle or even neutral with the engine off. So to summarize, its because most people who enjoy vehicles like to hear their engine.

epanek Mar 29, 2026 +1
Try a German sports sedan. Maybe 480 hp. A powerful engine is a dopamine machine. Press acceleration and 6 cylinder turbo goes vroom pushing you back in your seat and releases endorphins. Same reason people like roller coasters. Motion can be endorphins releasing. The loudness is just a part of the experience.

When I was young and ignorant and not too smart, I modified some of my cars, over the years, to be loud. That may still be the explanation.
1
Grumpy_Sober_Driver Mar 29, 2026 +1
My cynical mind says the louder the exhaust, the greater the deficiency in the trouser package department they are making up for.
1
uncleduddly Mar 29, 2026 +1
It's not about the noise, it's about airflow. The engine is just a big compressor taking air in and pumping it out. To get the best performance from your engine, you need to have low air restrictions. Factory exhaust systems have noise constraints, and in meeting those limits, the exhaust is not as efficient as it can be. A freer flowing exhaust will not have air restrictions, but the effects of that are more noise. There are people that straight pipe their cars, and they just make obnoxious noise with no performance benefit if they don't at least tune for the exhaust, those cars are obnoxious. I have a V8 in my car with a performance exhaust, but it's been tuned for the exhaust. It's on the louder side, but not the kind that rattles your dentures out. So just know, most of the time you hear that loud exhaust, it's some kid in a clapped out POS

There was a kid in my area who imported a JDM Euro convertible. Had what I described as the “hood gunfight tune” that was also on/off. It was stupid loud. He did it just to be an a******. Cops in my area also don’t like that kind of thing, so it only lasted a couple months.

Some cars are just naturally loud straight off the factory floor. Go look up a cold start video of an Escalade V, for example. The Fiat 500 Abarth and Dodge Neon SRT4 are notable examples of cars that had no muffler from the factory (unless you count the turbo as a muffler) Some cars (specifically those with forced induction) *can* see significant performance gains from more free-flowing exhaust systems. Catback and a tune is a c**** and easy way to wake up a lot of hot hatch type cars. Some cars just sound good loud, like old muscle cars with that V8 cam lope that shakes your chest. I dare say if I saw an old Chevelle SS roll by that was quiet, that would be kind of weird and I wouldn't like it Some loud cars sound like a buzzsaw and the owners do it either because they have no ears or because their entire goal is to annoy people, or both. I've had a couple toys that were louder than stock, but always kept off throttle/kept revs at idle until I was out of the neighborhood, never sat in the driveway revving (unless very momentarily while trying to diagnose a mechanical problem), avoid making any noise at hours when people are likely to be sleeping, and never anything ear-splitting or straight piped. Daily drivers have always been completely stock with stock mufflers.

While you may just hear an obnoxious, loud noise, a motoring enthusiast hears the purr of their finely tuned engine, in the same way a musician can appreciate the delicate note of an antique piano crafted with a particular type of wood. They’re hearing hours and hours of work that come together in an ensemble of mechanical symphony. They’re not only hearing the exhaust, they’re visualising each piston go up and down, and remembering taking them out one by one, cleaning them, and putting them back in. It’s extremely satisfying if you worked on it yourself.

They like how it sounds, most car people don’t modify their car to please or displease others, they just do it for their own enjoyment. With the increase in almost silent electric cars, loud exhaust have almost become a safety feature now as you can hear them coming which is great. The funny thing is people who complain about loud exhausts are the same people who let fireworks off lol Apparently body shaming is also acceptable if somebody has a loud exhaust
-1
East-Garden-4557 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Loud exhausts are obnoxious to everyone around you, as are people letting off fireworks
1
atsevoN Mar 29, 2026 +3
Loud exhausts don’t bother me but fireworks are annoying to me, mainly cause they’re loud enough to bother animas as the db level is significantly louder than modified exhausts But my point was a lot of people who complain about a car being loud then go and let fireworks off anyway so it’s just a bit funny
3
East-Garden-4557 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Fireworks aren't legal for members of the public where I am, they have to be used by professionals, so we don't have to deal with that
1
cigr Mar 29, 2026 -1
It's for horsepower. A quiet exhaust is quiet because it's restricted. By opening it up you get more power from the engine. If you cover your face with a pillow, you'll be quiet, but you can't breathe very well.
-1
East-Garden-4557 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Which serves no benefit when driving in suburbia or the city and have to follow speed limits. What it does do though is annoy the heck out of everyone else and disturb the peace and quiet. I don't appreciate hearing some insecure idiot's noisy car when I'm trying to relax at home, or sleeping

So there are levels to this. I ride motorcycles, so I can give that side. Motorcycles, usually performance bikes, are tuned down a good amount because of emissions regulations. Usually this comes in the form of limiting air, limiting fuel, or adding catalytic converters. They also understand that the people who buy these bikes don’t really care about that stuff, for better or for worse. So they tend to design bikes with the expectation that you’re going to modify it to get the “intended experience”. For reference, I have a Husqvarna 701 SM. It’s a performance oriented Supermoto style bike. I had a 2019 model which was bone-stock. It was a great bike, but the fueling wasn’t very smooth at lower RPMs and the muffler got really hot, a heat shield for it is necessary I’d say. That bike got stolen so I got a 2023 version that someone had put an aftermarket exhaust on. The bike is louder, which I don’t love, but the low end has been smoothed out, the muffler stays relatively cool and is no longer a burn risk, and the bike overall makes more power and is more fun to ride. I’ve thought about buying a stock muffler to get the noise down, but then I’d be paying money to bring back all these negatives, which doesn’t make a lot of sense. Am I happy that it’s louder and worse for the environment? No. But I’m not really going to do anything about it at this point.
