Even though I've never watched The Office, I frequently hear people remark it's one of the most rewatchable sitcoms ever, even if they are already familiar with every joke and plot point.
What, in the opinion of individuals who have watched it (or similar sitcoms), makes a show so resilient to repeated viewings? Is it the characters, the writing, or something else entirely?
Many comedies lose their effect once you know the punchlines, but some obviously don't, which is why I'm intrigued.
Deep character development & plot arcs turn fictional characters into friends. Rewatching is like hanging out with old friends & reminiscing.

Best answer. When jokes get old and you know them by heart, character keeps people coming back.

This and with the number of "main" characters means in nearly every scene the jokes are worth multiple viewings for the varied responses from different characters.

Background details and little easter eggs you miss first time around definitely help too. Plus the cringe humor in Office works different on rewatches - first time you're dying from secondhand embarrassment, but later you can actually appreciate how well crafted those awkward moments are. It's like watching a different show almost.

This is why I can rewatch Scrubs 2-3x a year. The reboot has made my heart happy.

I think every sitcom is very rewatch able if you like it. I dont think the office stands out.
30 rock in my mind is more rewatchable because of the jokes per minute

The American Office has heart. It has some memorable moments between the characters, some great writing and some good jokes. I've seen it 3 times from start to finish with my wife.

Steve Carrell is just so much more talented as an actor and comedian compared to Ricky Gervais. The scene where he goes up to Pam and compliments her painting is a scene that only few actors in Hollywood could pull off with that much sweetness and boyish optimism. It's stuff like that which makes Michael Scott one of the best TV characters ever imo. He loves his staff even if they can't comprehend it.

I’ve watched the British office as well & it’s excellent imo. The biggest difference is that David Brent is not a redeemable character & that’s funny in a very British way.
American sitcom comedy characters needs some kind of quality that makes the characters endearing in order to relate which is why American office is excellent. Both different but great in their own right

It depends. For me, and the sitcoms I rewatch, there's levels. 30 Rock is just so joke dense and *so funny* that you find things you'd missed every time you watch, or else you'd forgotten they'd made that joke but there's no time to breathe it in because there's another one around the corner. For something like original Roseanne, that was my life. I knew these people as if they were my own family, so there's a certain nostalgia there but it's also incredibly funny. And that's the root of it really, so times I just need to laugh, so I'll watch 3rd Rock from the Sun, or Will and Grace. Something just dumb and funny.

I think precisely because you already know the jokes and punchlines. It’s familiar, and comforting to know what’s gonna happen. I personally have only seen it once and that’s enough for me but that’s what people say.

The actors and their chemistry together may be first and foremost before the writing. The writing will improve once the actors and characters are locked in.
If the writers to to capture pop culture moments all the time, the show will weaken. But most social and cultural experiences are universal.

Just straight nostalgia for me. I feel good watching it. I watched this with family and friends religiously on its original run. I feel like I’m back in that time.

Less topical and more connected to personality.
The cynicism doesn’t rise above the expectations of the world view.
It’s funny.
As a general rule, I don’t like shows about horrible people but The Office is funny enough to counter that during its Scott years. I hated the last season.
Parks and Rec is the equivalent of that when it’s about people I care about.

I don’t avoid them. They are just not in my favorites. Sunny is very funny too but it’s not endearing to me.
Admittedly never got into Seinfeld.

Not having real world current events tied to the storylines helps as well. You don’t have to have a bunch of context for the time period the episode came from.

The shows I can return to over and over again, like Arrested Development or 30 Rock or MST3k or the first decade of The Simpsons usually have such an incredible joke-per-minute ratio that I end up forgetting 75% of them by the time I want to watch again. It helps to have a high episode count as well so there’s more to rediscover.

Have any of the actor/actresses done something terrible to taint rewatching it? Looking at That 70's Show.

This is going to sound like an obvious answer, but the simplest way to say it is that it’s really well done. There are things to catch that you don’t get the first time through. Not plot-wise, obviously, but little nonverbal things and subtle jokes. In addition, the character development that occurs makes it interesting to go back and watch and see how those characters developed from the perspective of knowing where they ended up.

I guess what it comes down to is you connect to the characters or you don’t. The Pam & Jim will they won’t they was very engrossing to a fan like me for 3 seasons.
If you don’t care then you likely weren’t watching that long in real time and even if you‘re binging the show now on streaming some people stop watching because they don’t like Jim and Pam or think it goes on way too long or they don’t like Michael, Dwight or any of the others.

Unlike other sitcoms, shows like The Office moved away from a laugh track. That required more quality humor and writing in general. And in doing so, they leave it up to you get the joke. Pit it all together, and it creates a really quality show

Chemistry and rhythm, like a dance. If you go back and watch Friends eps, yeah the jokes are a smidge dated(overblown imo, maybe a little distasteful at times), but the characters and chemistry are great, and the tightness and construction of each episode are incredibly well done. A, B and even C plots weave back into each other in some manner or utilize the other core 6.

The Office is just a funny show with hilarious characters and good writing. Although if you want an example of how those shows can falter watch the first season of the office and compare it with the second season on down. I'm not saying the first is bad, but it's no where near as funny. When I binge the series usually every 3 or 4 years I always start with season 2.
