Why has Antony Starr (Homelander) never been nominated for an Emmy?

Posted by Badlands51

I don’t think he’d ever win, but his performance as Homelander over the past 5 seasons in *The Boys* has been consistently great. I mean, his performance has been unforgettable. I think he should get nominated this year. Not win, but get a nomination.

Too much of a genre show and they like to go for more dramatic performances. Starr's performance as Homelander won't be forgotten either way.

He certainly should, but probably won't.

Forget The Boys, he was even better in Banshee (kick ass show)

Great watch. I enjoyed that whole cast and the stories were different.

Ironically, Starr's performanceis pretty subtle. Every little facial muscle he twitches conveys his incredibly messed up psyche.

Even that I wouldn't call terribly subtle. Like Starr is nailing it, but Homelander's barely contained insanity faces are about as subtle as a billboard.

Yeah, he's great but I wouldn't describe constantly twitching your face as being "subtle".

His performance isn’t any worse but his scripts are. Starr deserves better material.

Probably due to the show being more genre with the superhero aspect. That's unfortunate. I think it makes more sense to recognize The Boys at the Emmys than it does to recognize some superhero movies at the Oscars.

Giancarlo Esposito got nominated last year, so there's a precedent set, and TV shows in their last run might get more of a spotlight. But Antony Starr just isn't that liked, is he? He's a great presence but you don't get the feeling his peers like being in it.

He is one of the only actors who scares me, like his acting as Homelander is way too good. I'm obviously not saying he's a bad person, but he just looks so evil. If I was alone around him I'd be terrified

I don't think he would want to be nominated with all the attention it would give to the cook incident.

Snobbery mostly.

Because he doesn't represent woke ideology

I swear people get worse and worse at this. If *anything* the role so aggressively satirizing and highlighting the dangers of right wing shitbaggery is an extremely "woke" message, to the extent that woke even means anything anymore.

It’s why someone playing the role of hitler could never get award consideration

You know that the show is heavily satirising the likes of you, right?

Actually it's not really satirizing true progressives... only deluded wokes and magas... it does a good job of poking fun at how ridiculous both those types are. Hence why you have characters like Hughie trying to keep people grounded on actual morality and highlighting why both of these extreme sides are awful. I guess that went over your head though.

So it is actually not satirising the ‘woke’ then? The show is mainly satirising the right wing and the corporate wing which uses wokeness to sell their bs, which I believe are the two sides of the same coin nowadays.

I think the problem here is you don't understand the modern connotation of woke... there's a difference between regular progressives, and the screeching unhinged woke... which the show has satirized a long with the screeching unhinged right. I digress though, people need to focus on the topic here... which is why Homelander will never be nominated for an emmy... and that's because of what the character represents... and if a character doesn't represent woke ideology, they aren't getting nominated. It's why you never see great performances as a nazi get nominated for anything... even if the actor did a great job, and the writing was superb... the character is still a nazi and that doesn't sit well with wokes because they think it sends the wrong message to applaud characters like that in any way, even if the character itself isn't an actual endorsement of what it represents.

Could you give me some examples of this unhinged wokeness that the show satirises? I can’t think of any off the top of my head

"Woke" Food Items: In an amusement park scene, the show parodies over-the-top inclusivity with food stands labeled "Woke Wok," "BLM BLT," and "LGBTQ Turkey Legs". Basically making fun of people that are so fixated around their woke labels, and make it their whole persona in everything they do. But much like a lot of magas didn't realize the show was making fun of them... a lot of wokes don't realize it on the other side of the coin.

See that’s what I was talking about, when the show brings up stuff like that, it’s satirising how corpos use these ridiculous labels to sound more progressive without actually committing to any of that. For example, irl, companies like Amazon, apple etc say that they are “inclusive” or they care about their employees, when they actually don’t give a shit about any of that except profits. I think you and and a lot of others misunderstand this and think that the show is satirising both sides when it really isn’t. Rather it’s about how corporations and the right wing come together and erode democracy and make life worse for all of us. Case in point, in the show, vought does all of this, playing the woke and the anti woke card to make as much money as possible and then consolidate power using the MAGA minded idiots.

This wasn't really about corporations, though the show does cover that as well, this was poking fun at modern wokes and how they make their whole lives about one label. Like the reason corporations do that stuff is because, like in this case, the wokes literally eat it up. It's just that like the magas who were in denial that the show was poking fun of them and doing mental gymnastics, a lot of wokes also do those mental gymnastics, because to accept that the show is poking fun at them, would make them realize they are the butt of the joke.

You're deeply mistaken. The woke never eats it up. Literally every pride month all the famous drag queens always post how this pride month was not brought to you by amazon and disney but drag queens of the past and the actual queer people who fought for LGBT rights. I'd suggest you to surround yourself with actual woke people instead of just fully believing the narrative fed to you by MAGA grifters. Woke people have always criticized corporations for selling a woke image but not actually doing anything for actual progression. We all know these companies only care about profits. I've never seen a woke person d*** riding a corporation because they changed their profile pic during pride month. Regardless, the show makes fun of the hypocrisy of these corporations and not the consumers. The same corporations that are also shown to harm people. 90% of the show criticizes MAGA, billionaires, and corporations. The remaining 10% criticizes stan twt type people (again in a harmless way considering one side is shown to murder, and oppress and the other just constantly bitches and moans about irrelevant things). It's a satirization of American politics which is overwhelmingly and increasingly populistic, capitalistic, and favours the elite. Oh and the working class who'd rather blame immigrants than the elite.

Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet won oscars for playing a Nazi, and Ralph Fiennes got nominated and should have won

Completely different time and social climate.
