What's not mentioned in this article is *why* the name "Smithee" was used in this pseudonym:
It's because it reminds people of "Smithy," a hardworking typically-anonymous person hammering out creations in a workplace like a forge or blacksmith's shop.

Strange to see this today! I was just listening to a podcast about American History X and Tony Kaye wanting to use Alan Smithee but not being able to because he took out ads to trash the movie lol.
