Am I going crazy/missing something or is it just a massive example of when not to believe ratings, please help me understand why this is rated to well
I found out about this show yesterday and it being a doomsday/post apocalyptic setting made me really want to watch it but I was skeptical because I feel if it was any good I would've heard about it by now or it been a more popular show like White Lotus or Landman or something. Basically every episode of season 1 on IMDB is rated like an 8/10 which exceptional generally so I got excited
I'm 3 episodes in and I'm literally so confused. It's like the believability and quality of Scandal but worse because Scandal was in the 2010s, Paradise came out in 2025 theres no reason or excuse for it being made like this. I'm trying to stick with it because the premise I like but I keep getting annoyed and think wtf why when it just goes if into a completely unnecessary or irrelevant scene and acts more like a soap opera playing dramatic music at the end after a very predictable and undramatic revelation
I thought after just finishing episode 3 this is what the first intervals of AI produced TV and movies are probably gonna be like
There are so few post apocalyptic doomsday films or TV series to come out recently and that I havent seen (e.g. Leave The World Behind, Silo, etc. which are awesome) so I'm admittedly watching it still because I'm projecting onto it what I want it to be or hope it will be
If you don’t like after one episode, just stop watching. If you don’t like after three episodes, there won’t be some grand turning point that’ll reward you for sticking around. Season 1 is mostly
centered around mystery and will reveal the results gradually with moderately satisfying payoff. The characters fall into pretty safe buckets with passable levels of complexity and depth, but nothing you likely haven’t seen before. There about 10,000 streaming shows at a given moment in time. Tv should not feel like homework.
It has what is a bit of a nitpick for me in the “prestige tv” era which is a heavy reliance on non-linear storytelling, which I find to be a mask for a story that’s a bit shallow on plot substance.

This is the one show where there actually is a huge payoff in episode 7

This
episode 7 is nearly perfect tv.
It's how hollywood needs to do disaster movies the way that entire episode is paced, edited shit even the music slowly getting louder and louder the entire episode is perfect.

Nah everyone should watch every episode of ever highy rated or popular show regardless of their enjoyment, so they can post their opinions and hot takes about them on social media /s

I don’t even need to watch the show to have hot tales about it, I just make things up to get mad about.

I like to come up with bullet points of how a show should end, and then throw months long tantrums if the writers don’t end it that exact way.

Episode 6 or 7 can’t remember which one is of the best things I’ve seen on the small screen in years. Season 2 has some great story lines too.
Paradise is a slow burn but I thought it was worth it.

Ehhh kind of disagree for this show anyway. I thought it was pretty boring until like episode 4 or 5. Season 2 I really liked

Yeah I actually watched the first three episodes, found it dull and schmaltzy and stopped watching. People kept banging on about how episode 7 was incredible TV so I watched just that episode and picked it up from the start of season 2 because it seemed to be leaning more into the post apocalyptic side of things.
The second season was much better. Still pretty cheesy in places, but some decent sci fi twists are keeping me interested.

Ironically gave up on Silo, thought it was super interesting the first couple of episodes but then it got too dull for me.

There’s an excellent episode further in and I loved it on first watch but have trouble paying attention on a second watch when trying to introduce it to a friend.

Without getting too spoilery, it’s a phenomenal episode in its own right. It’s also a “non-linear” episode (how did we get here?) you should be super invested into the show, its characters and what’s going on before you get to that point, for the impact of the episode to land.

It’s got more of a network TV vibe to it, but it’s still pretty well written and performed. If you don’t like it so far it’s probably not going to get better for you.

I really enjoyed it. I also think it kind of opens up with time but if you are not interested now it may be time to move on to something that you consider better entertainment. It is fine we all don't like the same thing, embrace it.

It is a Dan Fogelman piece, it feels like This is Us in everyscene with that ambient sounds going on in the background. It is a show about characters more than the setting.

Maybe it's just not for you then, and that's okay.
I like it as it's surprising, well-acted with some great plot twists here and there, and high quality writing and producing.
Hey, but glad you liked Scandal, it wasn't for me.

Paradise is a very good show, it’s also one of the worst written shows I have ever seen. The fact that it can be both is extremely perplexing but it just works somehow. The characters are written very poorly and often make decisions that seem to push the plot instead of make sense for their character. The quality difference between episodes is drastic as well, with a few episodes being some of the best tv I have ever seen and other episodes seeming like absolute trash.

Yeah it's just you. Paradise leaves me wanting more after every episode. Season 2 finale just aired and I am mad that I have to wait a year before season 3 comes back.
Every episode is packed with drama and intrigue. If you're bored through it, then it's probably just not for you. But the ratings of it are very precise.

I'm enjoying Paradise more and more with every episode. At first it seemed cheesy, but I hung in and now I'm totally involved. I think the ratings are well deserved. Unique premise, great acting, genuine surprises and some great writing.
"A Holy Charge" episode in season 2 is one of best episodes of any series ever.

Yeah Paradise is actually pretty good. I think they could have done without all of the Jane stuff, but it’s still a solid show along with Silo. I actually like it a little better than Pluribus.

Why do people struggle so much with the concept of people having different opinions? It's okay to not like a show, or any piece of fiction or art, that is highly regarded by others, and vice versa. There's not really going to be a satisfying "why" explanation, but the best I can do is, a lot of times how engaged someone is with fiction depends on the show "clicking" with that person or not, which can be personal and depend on a lot of things. When something clicks, a viewer tends not to hyper-fixate on things like something being unrealistic or implausible, where as those same things can pull you out of the experience when it's not clicking. And neither side of that is right or wrong-- it's subjective.

Everyone has different tastes. It's like the post on Fallout yesterday where someone said season 2 was fantastic. I quite after 2 episodes of season 2 of fallout cause I thought it sucked.
I think Paradise is a good show and I enjoy watching it.
If you don't like it then pick another show to watch.

S1E7 is really pretty great for small screen.
Objectively the casting is pretty bad to me and the writing is mid at best but for whatever reason the show works and is entertaining.
You just have to turn off your logical parts of your brain.

The fact it gives off a feeling like Lost in the early seasons when the audience didn’t know anything and the bread crumbs only made you hunger for more bread crumbs is why it’s highly rated. The ending of season 1 is filled with hope, and the ending of season 2 is mysterious, but the series is top tier storytelling, and the music is phenomenal. I’m biased, I really like the cast and the story.

There are plenty of highly rated shows I personally think are terrible/boring, and poorly rated shows I think are great.
Sometimes you just have to accept you are in the minority opinion of reception to a piece of media, and that's not the end of the world.

Personally I love it. It reminds me of those 2000s disaster blockbusters like 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow. The cast is great, it’s total escapism and I find myself totally engrossed every episode.

Its a show I've enjoyed but not one to pick apart too much or it falls apart. The science is dubious as well as the politics. Layers of plot armor over some of the characters a nuclear bomb couldn't penetrate. But its a good watch as long as you don't think about it too hard.
I will say E7 of the first season to me was some of the best TV of recent years.

I thought it was alright the first episodes, but that episode was cinematically great. If the show has peaked there, I understand and that's fine, but it at least has me enthused for season 2.

Finished last episode of S2 last night. The season was good. Nothing quite as epic as season 1 and much more dubious science and small world coincidences that really speed along the story. But entertaining.

It sounds like you're a plot person, not a character person. And Paradise is characters first, plot second. So to people who enjoy the more in-depth character exploration of how people would deal with a post-apocalypse and being trapped in a faux-perfect bunker where mysterious happenings are occurring, Paradise is a great show. But for someone who just cares about seeing how people try to survive and rebuild after an apocalypse or actively go out investigating the mystery, Paradise focusing more on the characters makes you think of soap operas.

I hear you. Watched season 1 after all the love it got here, and was deeply disappointed. The acting is almost exclusively terrible, the music is garbage (looking at you, awful cover of "I think we're alone now"), and the writing is just "what if wayward pines, but worse". I think people have gotten too used to slop
