Tomorrow's logo better be a terrified elephant

Your elephant is outstanding, but your mouse looks a little like a cat -- can you make it smaller?

Hey there. I have listnook gold, but when I hover, it just says listnook.com. I've been trying since y'all 1st announced the hover deal, but it's still a no-go. Any suggestions?

raldi Aug 16, 2010 +70
You're running IE6, aren't you?

mikebeer Aug 16, 2010 +65
I just read this in the most condescending voice imaginable.
65
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +42
More of a sigh.
42
easyEggplant Aug 16, 2010 +16
It's not actually possible to utter that sentence and not sigh. It's like whistling with a mouth full of crackers.
16
wevbin Aug 16, 2010 +14
> It's like *goes immediately into NonsensicalAnalogy watch mode* > whistling with a mouth full of crackers *sighs in relief and begins weeping at the psychological damage and paranoia that NonsensicalAnalogy has caused.*
14
SappH Aug 17, 2010 +5
Sometimes, when people are making analogies in real life (outside of listnook), I think of NonsensicalAnalogy. What's wrong with me?
5
flynnski Aug 16, 2010 +3
as a web developer, I know this sigh/voice well, and was thrilled when my institution upgraded to IE7...
3
only2thumbs Aug 16, 2010 +5
Did you tell them yet?
5
LieutenantClone Aug 16, 2010 +1
Alt gets rendered as the tooltip in IE7 as well as IE6. I thought you would have known that, raldi. (They fixed it in IE8).
1
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +4
We pay no attention to any IEs less than 8. Very, very few of our users are on either 6 or 7.

10
JamesObscura Aug 16, 2010 +12

12

The comments highlight is one feature I might just get listnook gold for. Nicely done, guys.
24
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +17
You can try it out for free by sending us a postcard.
17
krispykrackers Aug 16, 2010 +2
Mind dropping the address right here for us? I have a postcard with your name written all over it.
2
[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +8
I'm using Gold and didn't plan on renewing. However, since my initial payment got me 9 months, I have the feeling that there will be features worth paying for. And the "highlight comments" is definitely one of them. Saves sooo much time
8
[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +5
Yeah seriously this is a great idea for those that are really community-inclined, ie that love to comment TONS. But it doesn't take anything at all away from lurkers. I love this idea! Thanks guys!

Go dress up as the droogs from clockwork orange and spread a bit of the old ultra violence downtown. The community has spoken.

raldi Aug 16, 2010 +51
I forgot to mention that it only applies to suggestions that get a lot of upvotes.

15
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +28
Come on, my *grandmother* could get 89 upvotes. I'm not even launching Photoshop for anything under 500.
28
[deleted] Aug 17, 2010 +6
Yeah about that... my comment has just reached 500 karma, so if you don't mind, the hivemind would now like to see a photoshopped picture of you and the other listnook admins dressed as the droogs.

raldi as a beta-tester where can I submit ideas/suggestions/bug-reports for the new features? the lounge?
1
[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 -2
Make it cheaper.
-2
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +5
If a dollar a week is too much for you, you can just send us a postcard every month. The postage, plus a pack of 3x5 index cards and a pen, will cost less than $5 / year.
5
SamHealer Aug 16, 2010 +2
Considering a hypothetical scenario where I did this rather than paying, would you actually read what I wrote each month?
2
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +3
Yes, we read every postcard. (We reserve the right to make an exception if you send us a 10,000-word one.)
3
SamHealer Aug 16, 2010 +9
>Month 17. Times are hard. My wife has left me, my landlord has locked me out. My boss told me to take a hike, and I don't think he means I should take up rambling. I went to my bank account. Still not enough to actually pay for Listnook Gold. But that's okay. Because I know that somewhere out there, Raldi, you're reading this. That helps me sleep at night.
9
[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +5
This section of the community isn't going to pay to be a beta tester. I hope that some gold features are reserved exclusively for paying customers. *There is nothing wrong with that as long as they are "over and above" features*. If you can get people to pay to be beta testers then more power to you but if you find sub rates are low I'd suggest the above as a possible reason. And no, the lounge doesn't count.

Is it really faster to do two DOM operations (remove from all comments, then re-add to some) than to do one (remove from comments that shouldn't have it, add to comments that should)? My quick-and-dirty profiling seems to indicate it's not.

'title attribute', not alt tag. i have my reasons for being picky about this.
10
SquareWheel Aug 16, 2010 +4
I assume it's loaded from a database and has to be built into each page (user page, sublistnook viewing, etc).
4
WhyRedditIsSnotty Aug 16, 2010 +6
That mouse is from motherfuckin' Rodent's Revenge. I thought you were going to embed a flash version of the game on the front page 24/7 erry day. edit: [For those who haven't, educate yourselves, fun game.](http://www.pcgaming.ws/viewgame.php?game=rodents_revenge)
6
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +5
I drew it pixel by pixel and have never played that game. (If I had, I would have just stolen the image.)
5

Oh. It looks real similar. Like seriously.

Is there going to be a way to tab through the new responses? I don't know if you've ever seen SBNation's blog sites (they're sports blogs, so probably not lololol sigh), but they have a commenting system that lists new comments in gold and they have keys to navigate through them -- C for the next new comment, X to mark a comment read, Z to mark a comment read and move to the next new comment, and Shift-A to mark all comments read. It is a truly excellent system, and it would be awesome to see something like that on listnook.
2
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +4
This sounds like something that would be really easy for the guys at [/r/listnookdev](/r/listnookdev) to do, and we'd totally accept that patch.
4
ehsany Aug 16, 2010 +8
Wow. A simple code put into the logo html after so many years. And it took so much money to do! HOLY SHIT!
8
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +11
The hard part was finding a place to store the titletext.
11
ohmyashleyy Aug 16, 2010 +7
Out of curiosity, where are you storing it? Database? XML? Text?
7
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +13
The front page now inherits the logo, titletext, and CSS from /r/listnook.com. We were already storing the logo and CSS there, and now we keep the titletext there as well. Moderators: note that you can now add titletext to your own custom logos.
13
[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +2

2

4
Salt-Boysenberry-957 Aug 17, 2010 +2
Here's a feature I didn't know about... I went to [listnook.com/r/quitsmoking](http://listnook.com/r/quitsmoking) and something strange happened. Is that a new feature? or was that something someone else set up?
2
raldi Aug 17, 2010 +3
It's a clever CSS hack. We should just support that without the hack.
3
thisisanaccount2 Aug 16, 2010 +2
Isn't this just adding the title tag the the url? Sorry for being a bit ignorant, but why did it need to be tested in Listnook Gold before implementing it?
2
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +10
It was more complicated than that. For example, we had to have special code to check whether or not you were a listnook gold subscriber, and if not, disable the feature. This code needed to be tested.
10
meltedlaundry Aug 16, 2010 +1
Does anyone know why two of the listnook avatars, from the blog page, are faded? Do they no longer work there/here?

I couldn't agree more. I hope the people complaining that listnook gold would kill the site are busily eating their words.
140
[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +397
I think acting smug over the success of listnook gold considering how badly it could have gone is like trying to plant a "We're #1" foam hand on a sleeping hippopotamus to entertain your girlfriend. I mean, I'm glad it is turning out so well, but that doesn't mean the people who thought it would be a bad thing weren't entitled to their opinion.

[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +46
I'm not a member of Listnook Gold and I see the post clearly. I just deleted the System32 file on my computer and it's a quick and legal way of getting past the Listnook Gold filters. Also, those are some **AMAZING** pictures of the Listnook office. How on earth did you get permission from the local city to have those exotic animals walking around the office freely? Why is the hippopotamus dressed in a pink tutu and why are the 17 midget clowns doing the Oompa Loompa dance around it? And what's the deal with the bare breasted, fire eating, chainsaw juggling 20 year old female college intern in the last photo?
46
raldi Aug 16, 2010 +55
Fortunately we convinced Microsoft to show a bogus warning about "damaging your computer" when you visit that directory, to scare off noobs from tampering with our DRM.
55
[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +24
You kind sir, disgust me. DRM is partially responsible for 9-11 and it is up to Patriotic Americans everywhere to bypass it by deleting the System32 file on their computer. When you accept DRM it's just the same as file-sharing with Osama Bin Laden who just downloaded an American Flag to burn over the internet. In short: DRM allows Osama Bin Laden to download and burn American Flags over the internet. **We must remain vigilant, Patriots!!**
24
[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +12
I hate DRM, therefore I don't feel bad about having p****** listnook gold.

Yeah, but it's a [Paul Frank](http://www.google.com/images?um=1&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&biw=1276&bih=623&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=paul+frank+skull&aq=f&aqi=g3&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= "I am using this tooltext not to highlight the link, but to proudly proclaim that I spelled bourgeoisie correctly without resorting to spell check. I believe that is the first time.") skull, which means you're just an unwitting tool of the bourgeoisie.

Yeah, it seems like a great system. Gold users get the fun of having new features early, the admins can try out new things on a more limited scope before expanding them, and they have the funding to do it.

doesn't something like this literally take 1 line of code? I feel like this feature would have been implemented with or without listnook gold eventually

As someone who has to test changes in a lab before I send them off to operations to implement, I can tell you it's a good idea to test ANY change, no matter how insignificant you think it is. I identify a change that must be made, put it on a test server, nail that test server with a traffic generator, and monitor the load difference. Listnook admins, as they've said, are using Listnook Gold just as I use my small army of Proof of Concept servers. So, yes, probably one line of code for this small addition... that would have been really f****** stupid to bring down listnook for because they didn't test it first.

I don't need Listnook Gold to prove I'm better than everyone else.

But it helps.

Despite all the complaints over listnook gold, these feature rollouts are showing how it really benefits everyone and not just gold members. Thanks!

I still am having trouble seeing how something as basic as rollover text is a feature...

[deleted] Aug 16, 2010 +32
People have been asking for it for ages..

Jdban Aug 16, 2010 +26
I think its funny they rolled this one out for listnook gold first. Mouseover text is NOT a server intensive feature at all.

Plutor Aug 16, 2010 +3
The rollover text isn't going to write itself. Someone's gotta build the admin interface for that, and validation code for it. Edit: And a place in the database to put it, and updating templates for every sublistnook. And unit tests.

I think it's pretty cool. I think it's funny how listnook gold members got to pick on all us peasant folk over a week's worth of obscure logos. I think it's neat how every tiny little insubstantial feature gets rolled out to we proletariats. If I had listnook gold, I would not be disappointed.

I didn't realize raldi posted this. And so I thought, "It kinda tells you, you f****** idiot!"

mouseover, get it?

tgunter Aug 16, 2010 +4
Okay, so the cursor over the logo is an arrow cursor, but as the image is a link when you scroll over it you actually get the hand pointer cursor...

By the way love the new gold feature of highlighting new comments on a previously viewed thread!

everything is going better than expected

Comment highlighting is awful. It slowed FF down to a crawl. Every time I opened a large thread of comments it became unresponsive! I had to disable it.

Is the listnook alien holding the arrow and clicking himself?

> This one actually didn't mean anything. We changed the mouseover text throughout the day so that goldmembers would be just as confused as everyone else. Dammit, I remember being confused after reading that title text, but I just convinced myself that it actually made sense.

This comment will probably not be highlighted by anyone. Prove me wrong!

The comment highlighting is awesome! Thanks!

Thanks for that. I was wondering about the Brunei logo, and the communist pirate with anaconda.

I was suggesting this feature some years ago. Finally this is here.
