Watched the first 3 or 4 episodes and can’t believe how seamless the performances, writing, stories and overall feel of the show mesh with the original run. Really impressive for so many years between. It’s like coming home.

They are residents, not students, yes? Either way, they are fitting in well.
Also, they are doing really well in presenting the different lifestyles with the older staff. Couple been together for ages, divorce, single life, dating/loneliness, and all the changes in relationships because of that.
Are we in peak medical television right now? The Pitt, Scrubs, Best Medicine and St. Denis are all great in their own way. So many good medical shows.

Oh they did it perfectly. Elliot becoming more cynical like Dr. Cox and JD calling her out on it was great. I also liked how they discussed that Cox’s mentoring style made Elliot and JD great doctors but also hindered them in other ways, like undermining Elliot’s confidence for years.
Also Turk being burnt out was a great little arc. I feel Faison especially is doing a great acting job this season. What was your favorite aspect of the returning characters?

I would argue that the revival is Faison’s best work. I’m rewatching the original series and he’s good in it, don’t get me wrong. But the advantage of age and experience is showing through his performances. Faison is nailing it.

Faison has been open about not trying back when he was doing Scrubs. He'd show up after a night of partying and hadn't read the script, or he'd get high on set. I think he's taking his job seriously now, so it makes sense he is coming across better.

Sure, that and being 20 years more experienced too. I think he killed it on the first, that's why he's so loved, but i agree in that he's clearly much more polished and gray performance.

The continuation of Cox character has been incredible too. Allowing them, now older, to be a little more vulnerable but no less barbed and vicious. Kinder but showing that it isn't just an act, Perry just *is* like that. Somehow, despite all odds, actually still having maybe one of the more healthy relationships despite it being built on spite and toxicity. It was great to see them again.

The Turk burnout scenes in the beginning of the season made me cry, both when I knew what was happening and when he told JD. I'm a nurse and I've seen burnout and felt a bit of it myself, that quiet suffering while becoming jaded, mean, and unexcited was executed perfectly by Faison. There were a lot of moments that had me tearing up, like the original show, but man that part got me.

I really liked Best Medicine. It fills an odd niche. It's an hour long dramady, that sometimes has a House medical mystery tied to a romantic comedy plotiline. It's soapy but not in a schlocky way, it has a great heart and makes you want to live in the cute community they have in the show. Hope there is a season 2.
Edit: Quick stop by Wikipedia shows there is a season 2 coming!

I know what a DP is. But what is a FP?
Also, speaking about that guy, I always remember that he gave an interview while (or shortly after) OG Scrubs was on the air, saying that he future proofed the frames for widescreen presentation.
I reaaaally hope that the success (?) of the revival will finally get the ball on a remaster rolling. 4:3 or 16:9, I'd be cool with both, but the show is long overdue for the HD treatment. Not many iconic and long running sitcoms left that are still stuck in SD presentation.

You forgot the unintentional comedy on Fox called Doc, where I think they got ChatGPT drunk and used it instead of a medical consultant. It feels like the writers have never been in a hospital. It's a fun soap opera with love triangles, amnesia, estranged couples forced to work together, dark secrets - all the tried and true tropes. But as a 'medical' show, it is laughable and frustrating.
It also suffers from workplace show syndrome. That's where you have a huge workplace for a large company or enterprise, and seemingly 6 to 10 people do EVERYTHING.

The Night Shift was basically that. Which is a shame, since the writing actually had some interesting ideas (the love triangle resolves with everyone realising that none of them can be happy in a relationship together and everyone does respect each other as doctors, getting rid of the corporate overlord means the hospital runs out of money, making some sort of principled stand is most likely to f*** you over) but the execution was all over the place.

I keep watching it to see how ridiculous they can get. The major plot line is that the brilliant but abrasive head doctor lady gets in a car crash and forgets the last 8 years of her life after extensive brain surgery. Within a a couple of days, she is up and around and wants to return to work, memory hole and all. Spoiler :she does.
Patients are seen promptly by at least two doctors. Patients are admitted to the floor seemingly without bothering with the ER. Doctors walk into a patient room and ask, "so what brings you in today?" as if it were a small private practice. Doctors attend all procedures from MRIs to physical therapy. Money is never even brought up. Paddles are charging and defibrillating someone a couple of times an episode. Vaccines are created by the doctors and ready for use quicker than Dr. Bones McCoy could test a cure on Spock.

See, I actually don't think it feels like Shrinking, but instead Rooster feels more like Scrubs to me.
Ted Lasso and Shrinking have the show based around people at a work place coming together as a close group to help and heal each other, but Scrubs and Rooster feel like shows about people at a work place but feels more independent with their stories/struggles while still weaving their threads together.
It's a different focus but they all still have Bill's thumbprint and charm on them.

> Are we in peak medical television right now?
Why does this sublistnook always have to be so hyperbolic? Why does everything have to be either the “best ever” or the “worst ever”?
But to take your question at face value, no, this isn’t the “peak” of medical television. The early 2000s had original *Scrubs*, original *Pitt* (ER), and my fav medical show ever, *House*, all airing at the same time. Not to mention *Grey’s Anatomy*, which wasn’t my bag, but an undeniable ratings powerhouse.

An intern is just a first year resident. There's a whole history behind the term but it's sort of a a vestigial term now.
18

+10
Gotcha. In the original series of Scrubs they made a bit of a delineation between students, interns, residents, and attending as if these were the levels each person would advance through as they rose through the ranks.
10
CoachMcGuirksCanteen3 days ago
+2
Yeah, from what I understand it sort of depends on specialty. Like for internal medicine (IM) the intern year (PGY1) is just the first year of your residency. For some other specialties, like radiology I think, your intern year is a bit different from the rest of your residency in that it's kind of a general IM type year (like a transitional period).
I am sure it's more nuanced than that, and I am sure a med student or resident can confirm!

Scrubs is my favorite show, ever. I’m so happy with how they approached this revival. It does everything right (imo), with the humor, then hits you right in the feels. To your point, I think you’re exactly right how they’re portraying different life styles.

+8
I’ve watched all of the UK Doc Martin and believe me, US audiences would sink that show so fast. The UK doc is deeply unlikeable and I think the changes they’ve made to the US version are pretty smart and help to make the show more engaging. The gay couple running the restaurant are the best thing, Annie Potts is way better than either of the UK aunties, the Larges are way less grating and annoying and Doc isn’t actively trying to kill the dog. These are all to the good as far as I’m concerned.
8
RenzaMcCullough3 days ago
+3
I think trying to keep the US version closer to the UK one would be as successful as when someone made an American version of C******. American Doc kicking a dog? I'm also glad that part of the show didn't hop across the ocean.
I love the UK Doc Martin but found myself enjoying the American one also.
3

I enjoyed UK Doc Martin as well. Martin Clunes is great and the wacky situations are just beyond, but it’s the same problem that the folks converting the UK Office had. There’s no way that US audiences (at large) would have tolerated David Brent, so we got Michael Scott. It seems like they’re accelerating the Martin/Louisa relationship, so I’m interested to see where the second season goes in that regard.

I enjoyed it. It's a little bit more of a "story of the week" type of show from old-style network TV. So if you don't like that, you wouldn't like this.
It reminds me a little bit of "Northern Exposure", because it's a small town in a semi-remote area. Quirky townspeople. Generally light-hearted show. The doctor is a little bit like House - bad people skills, but usually solving some sort of medical mystery each week.
And of course, the required will-they-or-won't-they romance, which to me is probably the worst part of the show.

This is a great point. I agree that there was more of a gradual build-up for these characters, but by the end I really grew to like them. In fact, the penultimate episode was a great mirror to the original's "My Old Lady," which came earlier in the season, but served as a very definitive way to solidify the characters after the first few episodes as they each faced their own tough dilemmas. By the end of "My Odds," I felt that same kind of satisfaction for the new characters' growth (on top of the great Dr. Cox reveal).

They’ve done a great job of giving the new interns big character archetypes (so they’re immediately memorable), counterbalancing traits that subvert those archetypes (so they’re not annoying cliches), and making it clear that all of them are extremely dedicated doctors (so they’re likeable). I just need ABC and Bill Lawrence to lock in a renewal already. New Scrubs earned itself at least 3 more seasons with how well this first one went. It felt like they figured out the natural evolution from Season 8 finale. They even eventually sold me on the whole divorce thing. This and Reggie Denkins are the two shows I really need renewed.

JD and Elliott actually discussed this in one of the new episodes after Elliott was mean to an intern that had a f*** up like Dr. Cox. Elliott says his tough mentoring made her a great doctor, but JD also reminds her how Cox’s constant teardowns and nicknames really hurt her confidence and motivation.
In general I like that they made Elliot the most like Dr. Cox out of the original main characters.

I liked that they addressed it directly in a conversation between Elliot and Cox in a later episode, too. Cox admitting that he was worried he pushed things too far with “Barbie” was a lovely moment.

And he still calls JD a girl’s name in that episode, showing that he has grown and is more reflective, but not a completely different person, which is great development.

I like how he stopped calling JD "newbie" and calls him "oldie".

Even better, the way he says it has a bit of warmth that wasn’t there in the original show, and JD barely reacts this time. It’s used almost as a term of endearment.

It helps that Cox is in a really miserable position at that moment

Workplace abuse is still exceedingly common, particularly in surgical and procedural specialties. And the whole 80 hour cap still gets broken all the time depending on program and specialty.

yeah seriously.
Im an IR fellow who did some time in the gen surg mines. The number of times I’ve been yelled at, chewed out, generally layed into, is HIGH. Even had surgical instruments throw at me a couple times.
When I rewatched season 1 the Dr Cox abuse really rang true

I like that you are such an optimist. Unfortunately, my husband is a pgy-3 right now and it hasn't changed much.
You COULD document and complain to HR but then what? They don't have resources to find other attendings quickly enough to fill the spot (depending on the hospital, but it is always difficult to recruit doctors). It is likely they will also shut down or suspend the entire department, which means that you will screw over not just the other attendings, residents, NPs, PAs and other related professionals, but also the patients as well. On top of which, as a resident, you don't want to have a suspended program on your resume.
I conceed that it is a *bit* better than 2001. But the healthcare system is at it's worse right now which means that hospital workers are underpaid and overworked. This becomes a toxic environment where people are angry and tired. On top of which, malpractice lawyers have become increasingly predatory so people rather kick the can (in this case, the patients) down the road than take any risks.
The hospital system and its treatment of residents is still very antiquated and rooted in the old "boys-club" and "I suffered so you have to suffer as well" mentality.

I just finished residency a couple years ago and would say things are only mildly better in real life than the original series. I had attendings with dozens of complaints of racism and sexism face zero consequences. If you have a big research grant or bring in a lot of clinical revenue especially you can basically do whatever you want.

I loved this season, except for Janitor's boring part that was so... predictable. The whole idea about the Janitor is that he is so unpredictable but this time I knew he was going to spin the narrative around the new janitor and the toaster gag was obvious from the beginning.
Otherwise they have modernized the show to fit the current day and age, some jokes are layered and those who know... they know.

Yeah they read more like early residents than med students ? The show leans into the burnout and mentoring stuff.

Yes! The entire new season is already out, and it’s great. Now we hope for a renewal. It got great ratings and reviews so everyone is optimistic.
They managed to get literally the entire cast back except Ted who’s actor Sam Lloyd sadly passed away, and Kelso who’s actor is 85 and retired.

There's also no Janitor.
Well, there is *a* janitor, but not *the* Janitor.
I would like to see him come back at least for one episode.
Edit - Stupid me, turns out I haven't watched the whole thing yet.

He's actually the Head Custodian of the Joint Commission, which I'm pretty sure is a fake job in a real organization. Joint Commission monitors and accredits healthcare facilities to make sure they're maintaining standards across a variety of safety metrics.
So the fact that Janitor works with JC is even funnier, because he has the ability to truly and utterly wreck JD's shit.

Knowing the real life implications of the Joint Commission made the Janitor working there so much funnier.

malcolm in the middle also.
TBH I enjoyed both. I'd say Scrubs was better but MitM was solid and I enjoyed seeing the characters again and where they're at--I just wish they had a few more episodes.

How long does it take for a show to get renewed nowadays?
Genuinely asking, I expected they’d renew it when the finale aired.
Edit: gotta love Listnook for downvoting questions

Since this is a network show, it might take a few months. It can be faster, but you also see a network renewing a bunch of stuff at once. So dont be surprised if we don't hear anything until july or later.
31
coatimundos3 days ago

Really? How do they stop the actors from moving into new projects in the meanwhile? I’d expect they’d want to keep to tight schedule and casts with yearly releases like that.
6
richard11773 days ago
+13
They are probably already under contract to be available. And we don't even know if they are going for a yearly release at the moment.
13

It’s an asymmetric relationship where the cast is on the hook, but the network isn’t
5
idkalan3 days ago
+2
During the initial contract signing, they'll add clauses to keep them available on the off chance a renewal is approved.
If an actor signs to another project, most will refuse that new project as they run the risk of the new project not working out.

My friend works at a hospital as a PA and she always said of all the medical shows Scrubs was the most realistic bc working in a hospital is ridiculous most of the time.
Here’s a really good retrospective of the show by José

Scrubs is the most realistic from a doctor/nurse aspect.
The one attending never really even steps foot into the rooms- just lets the nurses and residents do it.
You don’t have doctors doing MRIs and IVs like they do in other medical shows.

The one thing that has annoyed me as a nurse with these recent episodes was when JD changed Carla’s patient load. Doctors do not make nurses’ patient assignments. Nursing assignments are made by nurses, the people who know what the actual work flow is.

I just assumed as the Chief of Medicine he has some pull in deciding that stuff lol.

I just watched this episode and it was very clear the schedule was changed by the nurses because JD asked them, who if you paid attention is not working at the hospital as a doctor but as the Chief of Medicine.

And the nurses had already reduced her load. He was probably just going to let that stand.

This is what the many doctors in my family have said. They cite The Pitt as medically accurate in many ways, but kinda like Veep and DC, Scrubs seemed to be very realistic a in a day to day way than other medical shows.

Or just reintroduce the actor with a new but similarly themed name (Lancelot? Arthur? Gawain?) like they did when they killed Nurse Laverne and brought Alone back as Nurse Shirley.

As someone who never had an interest in watching season 9 (though this ironically made me interested, so I'll probably check it out at the end of the Scrubs rewatch I've recently started), I'd say the main things that helped make this one more appealing is both having a more prominent focus on the main trio than season 9 originally had, and the distance in time allowing them to have a more natural starting point in this new era, while not negating the great series finale in season 8.
But I'd say this focus on the changes since then really helped a lot too. They made great use of advances in technology (like the social media story), and the actual practices in the medical field as well. I thought that HR character was fun and had a good dynamic with the others.

This show definitely should've gotten more episodes for S1. Whenever this show gets renewed for S2, we better get 18 episodes *minimum*

Whoever is working the camera needs to be fired, there are a lot of scenes that look like they’re shot on green screen from the 90s only to have the focus change and watch the actor walk around in the background of the shot. Really irritates me.

We need another few seasons of this — it feels like old scrubs and hasn’t missed a beat. The new interns are quite likeable and haven’t been thrown in our face. A perfect blend of our old favourites, with a sprinkle of new blood. Also, Zach Braff is just so good at carrying the show as always.
