Why was listnook down!?

Posted by KeyserSosa

We had a database write master go unresponsive at about 9:30 AM Pacific. Restarting the db did the trick, but the collateral damage was that one of our worker queues looked like [this](http://imgur.com/cmB21) since none of the consumers were working. Apparently, rabbitmq gets downright pathological when you give it more than a few million things to store (but, then again, don't we all...), and it took us the better part of an hour to cleanly dump the items and process them correctly. tldr: no sleeping in on sunday for us and everything is back to normal.

FWIW, while fixing listnook and waiting for the aforementioned 2M items to dump to disk so we could process them more efficiently an get the site back, up, I did in fact try to check listnook to kill time. Sigh.

I wish I worked at listnook now because I could slack off on listnook, and say that I was just doing my job.

He's already dead so the only way of stopping him is by removing the head or destroying the brain. I will repeat that: by removing the head or destroying the brain.

The first error message I saw was "You get what you pay for". Apparently I shouldn't give more money to Listnook Gold.
14
KeyserSosa Aug 1, 2010 +17
...and perhaps we should update those error messages now that there is a way to pay for something.

So when did you implement Google Adsense then? http://www.listnook.com/r/listnook.com/comments/cw54d/listnook_is_trying_google_adsense_now/

Doesn't the Adense TOS disallow discussion of money made, unless you mean you're going to be sneakily vague about it... I guess that's probable.
5
laverabe Aug 1, 2010 +75
Good job on getting it back up. Do you guys have to work 24/7?
75
jedberg Aug 1, 2010 +431
24/7/365 ;) I'm told I'm allowed to take one hour off to get married next week.
431
malnourish Aug 1, 2010 +70
A marriage with live snarky comments from all the Listnook Crowd? And then a warm, heartfelt congratulations :) Followed by a joke, a pun, and someone's similar story.
70
jedberg Aug 1, 2010 +41
Maybe I'll pick a twitter hashtag and project the tweetstream on the wall...
41
kleinbl00 Aug 1, 2010 +51
I think don't. Congratulations, man. I hope you have a joyous, normal and completely-internet-free ceremony.
51
[deleted] Aug 1, 2010 +8
Well, an Listnook marriage thread is not as bad idea as you think. You will give a funny story to tell. *Remember, how 8 million people commented on our vows, in our marriage thread*
8
ChocolateGiddyUp Aug 1, 2010 +6
Exactly what I was going to suggest. That or an IRC. Guaranteed entertainment at your wedding party!

Wow. If listnook's employees go down as often as listnook does she's going to be a very happy bride...

Sorry, Gimli. She only gets to have jedberg's axe from now on.
60
[deleted] Aug 1, 2010 +18
careful, she might end up with an axe wound
18
[deleted] Aug 1, 2010 +15
So.. you are moving from professional position with expectations of getting it up 24/7/365 to a personal position with expectations of getting it up 24/7/365. Congrats!
15
[deleted] Aug 1, 2010 +7
Yeah but professionally he's expected to *keep* it up 24/7/365.

I was on listnook about 5 minutes before I had to walk down the aisle at my wedding. My Dad leaned over and asked me what I was doing. "I got an orangered! Muuuuuuust check!" Anyway, congratulations jedberg!
27
jedberg Aug 1, 2010 +34
Yeah, that would be me, which is why I'm not allowed to have my phone with me.

Priest? Officiant my friend. :)
37
pavs Aug 1, 2010 +6
I am not very familiar with the wedding business. Is that a non-religious wedding or an inter-religious wedding, where you have Officiant? Curious. BTW. Congrats! Is she a listnookor?
6
[deleted] Aug 2, 2010 +4
I believe so, yes. A friend of my husbands obtained the necessary licenses and labelled himself as "Shepard" for our wedding. But I think Officiant was the technical term.

"24/7/365" always seemed a little redundant to me. Shouldn't it be "24/7/52"?
30
kevmus Aug 1, 2010 +11
52*7!=365.25
11
crazyeight Aug 1, 2010 +29
Yes, but it completes the parallel structure: 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. 52 weeks a year. If you're going to say "24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year", why even have the middle part? "24/365" would cover it.

codysattva Aug 1, 2010 +16
My senses tingled as I approached the Forbidden Outer Door. Not knowing (or was it not remembering?) what awaits on the other side, I hesitated. What was I doing? What was I *thinking*? Something was calling to me that I could only now just barely here over the deafening silence of The Listnook being Keanu'd. It filled my senses to something I could only approximate to be just over 9000, causing my fingers to twitch and reach out for... the door? the keyboard? the lube? I was so confused...everything went black. I woke to find myself in my comfortable lazy boy chair with my mouse slowly, methodically, clicking with the same tempo as my erratic heart rate over the refresh button. What was it like? It was nightmare, wrapped in bacony temptation, hidden inside a daydream.... I hope I never encounter that "warmth"--as you call it--again.

Seriously, I'm doing my first triathlon today, in Alexandria bay NY. I'm swimming 600 meters (which is horrible, btw... ), 17 mile bike ride.. and on the bike ride, I see lots of rich people going for walks in front of their mansions... with the dog... and along comes this fat f***** on a segway, 'going for his morning walk.' Jesus jumping christ on a pogo stick! (I should mention that I was passed and beaten by a 72 year old man.. and came in 6th from last.. but I finished. Best day of my life.)

24.79 m/s² on Jupiter. 9.81 m/s2 on Earth. That's actually pretty freakin' heavy.

There's that word again; "heavy". Why are things so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?

Just 95? I'm in Miami and its probably like 99 right now, feeling like 105. I play roller hockey a couple times a week and its terrible. The asphalt gives off heat for hours after the sun has set. At times its like 9:30 and its still 88-90 degrees outside. Edit: Humidity = Stickiness.

Horrifying. At first there was nothing but blistering whiteness so I used the reflection off of an old monitor. My God man, why haven't we noticed this invasion of giant green-brown monsters! Their green spawnlings swarming everywhere as well. Listnook, I fear we must put a stop to this soon.

TheOneGaffer Aug 1, 2010 +7
>I fear we must put a stop to this soon. ... riiiight after I refresh listnook again.

I went outside, and when I came back listnook was down. I'm not going outside again, after knowing the potential consequences.

bechus Aug 1, 2010 +23
Never heard of it. URL?

phylum Aug 1, 2010 +6
You think that's scary? I almost went outside and *did something productive*. I'm hyperventilating a bit at the thought.

I weep for the day when NES owners become doctors.

After reading this I still don't understand why listnook was down but I'm glad its back up now.

They had a thing that locked up and another thing that freaked out and then they restarted the servers and fed the hamsters.

Etherealm Aug 1, 2010 +12
Well thank you, my appartment is clean now.

lanismycousin Aug 1, 2010 +1

WHY WAS LISTNOOK DOWN!? WHY WAS IT DOWN!? TELL US THE REASON!

snnmnd Aug 1, 2010 +1
>Why was listnook down? I stopped asking that question a long time ago.

Because you four idiots are incompetent morons who are in *way* over your heads.

As a fellow server administrator (on a much smaller scale...) I thank you for sacrificing yet another day to keeping all of us happy. The withdrawal that most of us felt for that short downtime proves how much we love the Listnooks.

Milgwyn Aug 1, 2010 +5
The "listnook is down" page was surprisingly cute, too. First time I'd seen it.

Armughan Aug 1, 2010 +11
>First time I'd seen it No wonder. It's your first day here

Milgwyn Aug 1, 2010 +5
I've been lurking here off and on for a month or two, but yeah, I registered yesterday.

Maybe you hit autovacuum_freeze_max_age in pgsql? http://developer.postgresql.org/pgdocs/postgres/runtime-config-autovacuum.html This is a gotcha Hi5 ran into too... You should really set it lower so it doesn't kick in unexpectedly after 200 million transactions.

So many contexts where one finds oneself saying that.

Thanks for the working on a Sunday part, that must have been hell.

For a brief moment, tears welled up in my eyes, and silently, my lips formed the words: "But, I paid... Charter... Lounge..."
