Why we dont have a 16+ rating as a middle ground between tv-14 and tv-ma?

Posted by Mean_Net9983

I dont seems to understand why netflix couldn't follow amazon prime's direction: [https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=G2C2CPZWGZWHZ42J](https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=G2C2CPZWGZWHZ42J) or crunchyroll's direction : [https://help.crunchyroll.com/hc/en-us/articles/29883830192788-Understanding-Content-Ratings-and-Restrictions](https://help.crunchyroll.com/hc/en-us/articles/29883830192788-Understanding-Content-Ratings-and-Restrictions) and give age ratings by numbers instead of following the crappy TV parental guidelines system which exist. Globally, even Netflix themselves use it for countries which don't require the use of their own age rating. And even then, those countries have the 16+ age rating but there is not distinction between teens and adults. Like older teens or young adults of sorts for example. Why is this a thing in 2026? Why is the FCC so behind on time to protect young kids, given the fact they are cracking down on social media so hard nowdays , they should also do this with streaming as well. What do you guys think?

There's nothing at 16 that I wasn't doing or at least knew about at 14.

That 14 should be reduced to 13, like you see here: [https://help.netflix.com/en/node/2064/al](https://help.netflix.com/en/node/2064/al)

There is a lot of difference in development though.

Ages 14 and 16 are not really that distinct in terms of content they can handle.

Well, why so many anime are tv-ma for no reason, is it that 14 year old's cant handle jojo or jjk? Why kids shows are rated tv-14 like sailor moon on netflix? i have no f****** idea. Can you explain me this?

Streaming’s basically the Wild West, FCC doesn’t really govern it like broadcast, so Netflix just clings to the old system. Easiest fix for now: lock kids’ profiles to TV-14 and under.

ummm, yeah if shows like this: [https://www.netflix.com/title/80052714](https://www.netflix.com/title/80052714) have a tv-14 rating, I am not sure what to do,, there is not option to filter specific shows. That show has more violence than 80% of tv-ma anime on netflix.

No one follows those ratings anyway. Maybe that is enforceable if you are in a movie theater and there are gate guards, but even then. But if the movie is on Netflix, do you honestly believe a 17-year-old seeing the R-18 ratings will go, "oh shit! I should not watch this!"

To be fair, most things should be 13+ or 16+, not 18+. Streaming services are way too prudish nowdays. But it becaome hard to differenciate when both the night agent and monster ed gein story are tv-ma. night agent is 16+ (even 13-14+) but monster is 18+ all the way, for example.
