It was an absolute smash hit as they called it then. They played it 3 times an hour on the radio, lol. Glenn was part of pretty famous group of studio musicians if you weren’t aware. Had the best backup and session players. Gotta love the lush string arrangements. But yeah, this made him a superstar.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written, “…I need you more than want you, And I want you for all time”

One of my most favorite lyrics across all music. So simple but completely nails the thought.

Amazing lyric. I feel that one in my bones every time.

When I was a kid, this song along with gentle on my mind were about the hokey-ist songs I ever heard. Now in my 60’s playing with a jam band they almost bring tears to my eyes. Life will do that to you.

Amazing example of how a song can tell a story, take you places, make you feel deep emotions about something, all in just a few minutes.

I was working at the Nugget in Sparks as a Maintenance lead like 2001 and one night I am called to the showroom because there was a broken pipe near the green room. As I am working backstage, this nicely dressed gentleman was hanging out, I knew he wasn't an employee but I didn't know if maybe he was a high roller doing a tour(back then a high roller could literally walk into a kitchen and make themselves a sandwich and no one would say anything). Anyway, dude is shooting the shit with me while I work, asking me about my life, how long I lived in the area, etc. After a few minutes of banter with him, he goes "You have no idea who I am, do you son?" I say "no sir, but I am guessing I should?" He goes "when you get home, call your mom and tell her you just met Glenn Campbell" And ngl, the way he said it made me think at the time he might actually be my real dad! My mom actually didn't really give a shit but my aunts lost it

Dude was amazing. Could shred too. Unbelievable talent.

I heard a live recording of this, Campbell introduces it like it's the Lawrence Welk show or something, I'm thinking he's just dialing it in like he's probably done 1000x. Then it gets to the solo bit and dude just completely destroys. It's one of the tastiest, gnarliest guitar solos I've ever heard

One of the greatest songs of all time. Wanna feel unaccomplished? Jimmy Webb wrote both this and MacArthur Park when he was 21.

Miss that bass.

It's a baritone guitar!

I couldn’t hear it in a live recording he did several years later. Maybe they thought it was too heavy or inelegant, but it’s one of many things that I really like about that original recording.

The first record that was "mine". It was a Birthday gift in 1969. I don't even think the album was in stereo. The single was great, that's for sure. His cover of Otis Redding's "Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay" was great too.

I was first introduced to this song from Villagers [cover](https://youtu.be/gFc4JhfnJ4M?). Love both versions.

[Really great mini-doc on the song from David Hartley](https://youtu.be/3au2nqyMbc0?si=vuUFti9TM8-_hFvJ) Amazing to think it’s an “unfinished” track!

Written by one of my favorite songwriters, Jimmy Webb. He collaborated a lot with Campbell, and they were polar opposites in just about everything but music.

Great song, but I can't hear it now without thinking of American Dad. "And I'm a fish whose name is Klaus..."

Bob Dylan thinks it's the greatest song ever written.

I guess they looked it up and deleted the comment. You weren't kidding! [The greatest song ever written, according to Bob Dylan](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/greatest-song-ever-written-according-to-bob-dylan/)

What!? I've heard that song a couple times before and I always assumed it was a parody or something.

And he'll gladly stand on Steve Earle's coffee table and say so.
