Will Forte & D'Arcy Carden's new Hulu show Sunny Nights is 100% on Rotten Tomatoes

Posted by Artistic-Heat8961

I quite liked it! It dropped last week and feels under the radar. It's a dark comedy drama in which Will and D'Arcy play siblings who go to Sydney to sell spray tan and get involved in blackmail and murder. Their chemistry is off the charts. It's a pretty wild ride: chaotic, absurd yet grounded, dark yet enjoyably ridiculous. Full of twists with some inventive shots for what I imagine is not a Thrones-like budget. A very fun time!

adults was another good one i heard about there. although i think the first half of the season was way better than the latter half i liked deli boys a lot even though i usually have trouble liking shows where the main characters are rich, it usually makes them so non-relatable but the show was funny enough to make up for that i guess.

I just listened to that episode too, it was great. Do you (or anyone else reading this) remember the phrase Scott and D'Arcy were saying was the perfect phrase to get into the Auatralian accent? Edit: thanks to the people who responded

The TV show has been over for a while, but the podcast is as good as ever. Lots of crossover from younger comedians from the Dropout platform.

I feel like literally everything D'Arcy Carden is in somehow turns out great. Her agent is either insanely lucky or the only person in Hollywood that can reliably avoid stinkers. Normally even brilliant people wind up in occasionally shitshows where something goes wildly wrong like Sean Connery in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen but I think I've never seen her in something terrible.

Will Forte seems to be taking the Adam Sandler route of using shows as a excuse to travel around the world after 'Bodkin' (which was good) in Ireland a couple years ago

bigtittiesbigbutttoo Mar 18, 2026 +61
My wife and I were in Dublin eating dinner at a restaurant in the hotel we were staying and a large group sat down across the place from us. I saw Will Forte out of the corner of my eye within the crowd of the group and I said way too loudly “What the f*** is that Will Forte” and he looked over and waved after hearing me, it was such a weird experience. Come to find out he was in Dublin for the premier, what a wild world!

Yes I really liked that show too. I saw something in the credits about it being produced by the Obamas?
74

Ah, that explains the low imdb rating even though every episode rating is 8+

13
BLOOOR Mar 18, 2026 +10
> after 'Bodkin' (which was good) That felt more like Cuckoo, where they've invited an American on their show for face and name recognition.
10
MissingLink101 Mar 18, 2026 +9
The thing is Will Forte isn't really a recognisable name in what are likely the main markets for Bodkin.
9
mullet85 Mar 18, 2026 +2
Samberg wasn't really at the time either though, more just a face that people might recognise from SNL, which is pretty much the same for Forte
2
MissingLink101 Mar 19, 2026 +2
Yeah it was pre-Brooklyn 99 but the Lonely Island videos/songs had been massive on YouTube for years so many people would have known him as the face of that. Even if people didn't see anything else from SNL at the time, those videos were very well known.
2
mullet85 Mar 19, 2026 +1
But Forte had last man on earth, 30 rock and macgruber - I think he's got to be pretty recognisable too right?
1
MissingLink101 Mar 19, 2026 +1
30 Rock is the only one of those that has popularity/recognition outside of the US really and even that's pretty limited (most would only know it for Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin). Plus he was only in 12 episodes.
1
Infamous-Lab-8136 Mar 19, 2026 +1
He's nowhere near as recognizable as Samberg was People knew Andy Samberg either by name, or at least as things like "The D*** in a Box Guy" Forte is still, for a lot of people, "That guy from SNL that isn't Bill Hader" and those are people who only learned Hader's name after Barry was a hit All those shows that have an ex-SNL star in the lead and pepper their cast with SNL guest stars like Parks and Rec or 30 Rock have a pretty insular fan group so he's known among them

I think it says more about the state of los angelese for filming productions. It’s cheaper to film in Australia or Ireland because of tax credits than it is to film in LA

1
doubledub Mar 19, 2026 +1
While this idea could still be true, Ireland and a Australia are two of the cheapest places to film right now. It’s a big thing in reality competition tv right now. US shows now find it cheaper to fly all contestants to one of those countries to use their cheaper crews.

JUSTICE FOR D'ARCY. By that I mean she hasn't been particularly wronged, just that she should have had a lead role ages ago. Sorry, I said she, not a girl.

“Their chemistry is off the charts” I feel like if you don’t have chemistry with D’Arcy that’s a you problem
71
Artistic-Heat8961 Mar 18, 2026 +13
Fair! But feels like believable sibling chemistry is harder to pull off IMO.
13
AWorldwithoutSin Mar 18, 2026 +6
Eh, they aren't doing sibling chemistry, a few epsidoes in I'm starting to wonder if they doing a "White Stripes" thing where they pretend to be siblings for a scam but are really married. Their relationship is odd.
6
thecricketnerd Mar 18, 2026 +32
It's pretty solid. One of those shows that'll be 100% with an average rating of 7. It only has 8 critic reviews on RT which is weird for how long ago it actually came out.
32
mzingg3 Mar 18, 2026 +70
Rotten Tomatoes is so much more gentle with TV shows than films
70
ninjatarian Mar 18, 2026 +40
It also has a total of 8 reviews
40
giga Mar 18, 2026 +20
It’s also often very misleading for tv shows. I think especially for long running shows? My theory is only critics who enjoy those shows watch them past season 1 to begin with and thus you end up with 100% on season 7 of random-show-that-obviously-you-must-like-if-you-watched-7-seasons-of-it.
20
rnhf Mar 18, 2026 +9
doesn't their rating system still only count positive or negative? Show's got a 77/7.4 on metacritic, seems a lot more plausible
9
snowhawk04 Mar 18, 2026 +3
The Rottentomatoes scoring system is more of an aggregate score representing positive reviews (60% or better). A show with all 6/10 reviews would be 100% under the system.
3
degggendorf Mar 18, 2026 +4
> Show's got a 77/7.4 on metacritic, seems a lot more plausible Getting 77 out of 7.4 is over ten times the maximum! That doesn't sound plausible at all!

You get that effect with movie sequels too. Especially when the first movie was very divisive, often the majority of reviews of the sequel are only the reviewers that already liked the first one.

1
VagabondVivant Mar 18, 2026 +2
I never got around to watching it. What % should it have been?
2
somersetyellow Mar 18, 2026 +2
Probably 30-40℅ for first two seasons then 60 for season 3 You can check out my longer reply above, but TLDR the writing is very poor across the board. Bad dialog, bad charscters, and very plot hole filled nonsense storylines. It also changes/ignores a lot of established canon and design. Star Trek is of course always nonsense storylines, but there's a difference between fun nonsense that allows for analogies and situations that makes you think differently about the world, and empty action filler nonsense. Picard is unfortunately the latter. Season 3 is much better. Finally actually see the TNG crew doing stuff together. But the show is still overly reliant on a franticly changing, mellow dramatic, and poorly written storyline. EDIT: Changed my response to give you a better answer and not just a copy paste of my other comment.
2
VagabondVivant Mar 18, 2026 +2
> Probably 30-40℅ for first two seasons then 60 for season 3 Woof. Guess I'll leave it in the Unwatched pile then. Don't think I wanna slog through two bad seasons to get to a good one. Thanks for the input (and edit).
2
wvgeekman Mar 18, 2026 +6
Honestly, you can just watch Season 3 and not miss much. Really. My wife *just* watched 3 and was perfectly fine with getting the story and characters.
6
torndownunit Mar 19, 2026 +2
I might actually try this. There was no way I was starting season 2. I barely made it through season one. If 3 can work as a stand alone I'll try that.
2
somersetyellow Mar 18, 2026 +4
Season 3 is very standalone. Try that alone to enjoy some nostalgia. The writing in 1 and 2 is so bad that they shot 2 and 3 simultaneously and 2 still had nearly nothing to do with 3 😅
4
VagabondVivant Mar 18, 2026 +1
Interesting! I may do that, then. Thanks for the heads up!
1
snowhawk04 Mar 18, 2026 +2
You do not understand what the tomatometer score is. 85% represents the percentage of critic reviews that were positive (60% or better). if 85/100 reviewers scored a show 6/10 and the other 15 scored the show less than 6, then it would have a 85% rottentomatoes score. Looking at the 85% score for *Picard* season 2, there are 94 critic reviews with most scoring the show between 3/5 to 4/5. Season 3 has a 97% tomatometer score with most critic review scores between 3.5/5 and 4.5/5.
2
Lfsnz67 Mar 18, 2026 +2
I was actually shocked by all the raves for season 3. It was really not very good
2
Punman_5 Mar 18, 2026 +3
I thought it was good. I watched it recently and I honestly didn’t understand why people hated it so much.
3
somersetyellow Mar 18, 2026 +5
* Ignored a bunch of established Canon. Romulans being poor refugees after one planet is destroyed when they actually had hundreds of planets. Season 1 forgets Lore existed. Floating holograms everywhere. Brand new Borg design. Angry unprofessional starfleet. People living in poverty on earth. Etc etc etc etc * Very non sensical plots in 1 and 2 and most of 3. The galaxy is at stake! Picard becomes a robot. There's Borg. Wait no there's AI robots. Oh also changelings! What if we time travel now? Picard had a baby and Beverly kept it a secret? Oh my! Oh hey Q! Nevermind guess he's gone now. Yay Wesley is randomly here for the robot girl now. * Terrible camera work. VERY dark lighting and set design. * Costume design looks like everyone went to the black leather store in 2006. Ooo and see how we colored peoples hair with stripes? * Weak characters and introductions. The elf guy with a sword just exists with a sword the whole time. Then he kills a hallway full of people armed with phasers... with a sword. It's so ridiculous. * Using brief extreme violence for shock value rather than carrying anything along for the plot. * Stilted and rough dialogue. Character mellow drama takes center stsge. They talk a lot without actually saying much. * No thoughtful exploration of current issues and ideas like TNG did. Current issues are there but it's like, "some people get annoyed by the refugee romulans, but Picard knocked down a sign to show that racism is bad!" No actual exploration of the ideas of bigotry, past traumas, racial unease, misinformation, etc. Everything is extremely surface level in an action movie sorta way. TNG really made you think about moral ideas and problems, but this show was rather mindless. Season 3 was a better course correction but drifted too far into fan fic, ridiculous plots (oh no the Borg are back, and also changelings, and everything is so hacked we're the only ones nor hacked), and of course more mellow drama. I just couldn't take it seriously as any kind of follow-up to the original show. That all being said I'm not trying to be too superior elitist. If you enjoyed it, that's totally ok. Different television for different people is ok.
5
fakieTreFlip Mar 18, 2026 +1
You're misinterpreting what the tomatometer score represents. It's not grading the actual content on a 1-100 scale. It's simply the percentage of reviewers that gave the show or movie a positive review. 100% of the reviewers could've given a 7/10 score, and it'd get a 100% tomatometer rating.
1
somersetyellow Mar 18, 2026 +1
Exactly, and most of the reviews are like 3 or 4 out of 5 Even a 3 or 4 out of 5 is a pretty generous review for this shows first two seasons. 4 is even generous for S3. But I guess I am critical of it. If the reviews were more critical or at least polarized it would take the score to where I think it should be in the 30s and 40s. The RT reviews are pretty gentle to positive on the show overall and it reflects in the overall score of 85 percent. I think the RT score reflects the vibe of the overly positive reviews accurately and I'm not misunderstanding its meaning. The whole point of RT is that a higher percentage score means more reviewers generally think it's good. More reviewers generally thought Picard was good. And that's just kinda crazy lol
1
TheButterPlank Mar 18, 2026 +2
RT has gotten bad in general. All the 'critic reviews' are riddled with random websites, blogs, and youtube channels I've never heard of. Not to say these are all useless or invalid, but at this point I wish RT would have a third category for 'social media reviews' or something.
2
snowhawk04 Mar 18, 2026 +2
Rotten Tomatoes doesn't do any actual reviewing. They are an aggregator. They simply present a tomatometer score representing the percentage of critic reviews submitted that are positive (6/10 or better). A show/movie is fresh if its aggregate review score is at least 60%. It becomes certified fresh when the aggregate score is at least 75% and their are a minimum number of reviews met. Films (wide release) is 80 reviews, films (limited release) is 40 reviews, streaming movies is 40 reviews, tv (individual season) is 20 reviews with 5 from top critics.
2
KennyShowers Mar 18, 2026 +1
It's true that RT scores for TV are often very high compared to movies, but it's not that the platform itself evaluates them different, it's just that the binary way it works, and the way TV is made/released/reviewed, ends up with more skewed results. For one TV critics don't generally watch every major release TV show like many film critics do with movies. So a TV critic will probably only review something that's kinda up their alley, and as such it's very likely that a show with lots of hope and attention put into it will be at least "okay" to somebody that show is designed to appeal to. This gets even more pronounced for seasons past 1, where the only critics sticking around to review a season 2-3+ of a series probably already like 1.
1
xayzer Mar 18, 2026 +18
I've never cared for Rotten Tomato scores, they've never meshed with me, I much prefer IMDB. The score there is 6.2/10 which feels just about right.
18
that_boyaintright Mar 19, 2026 +2
IMDB ratings are really useful for gauging how casually entertaining a show is, but not nearly as good at measuring its value beyond casual entertainment.
2
xayzer Mar 19, 2026 +4
Movies are nothing more than casual entertainment, at least for me. If I need anything more substantial, I turn to books.

I struggled with this show. Watched the first 2 episodes but wasn't into it.
23
JJMcGee83 Mar 18, 2026 +3
Same. I watched the first episode and not a single laugh. It doesn't seem like it's trying to be funny, it seems like a drama. It kind of reminds me of Fargo but just not as interesting or good.
3
returnofthemacksx Mar 19, 2026 +2
Agreed. My husband and I tried to watch this weeks ago, but we could just not get into the show. I think we got 2.5 episodes in and turned it off.

I got four episodes in and gave up. The blend of comedy and violence just did not work for me, just no laughs despite the talent of performers.

Does it get funnier? I watched the first episode and sure the situation is a little wacky but my SO and I never laughed. Feeling let down by the comedy/drama tag
7
SynthD Mar 18, 2026 +4
Some day someone will make a show that earns an audience in episode one.
4
Alis451 Mar 18, 2026 +3
they do make them like that, but generally tend not to do as well. you usually want a build up of tension, instead of start at the peak then tumble by the second episode. some shows also tout themselves as "high adrenaline" that try to maintain a consistent high tension throughout the entire season, this can also burn out the watcher, especially if each episode ends in a cliffhanger. i think "24" tried to make this its style. [This Tension and release cycle](https://i0.wp.com/matthewsonmarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Star-Wars-Story-Arc.gif?ssl=1) shown by the star wars story arc is usually how you want things to go. You can further break it down into the three Acts with Luke's parent's dying or Alderaan being destroyed as the end of Act 1 and Obi-wan dying the end of Act2.

I didn't expect to like his Last Man on Earth show, but it's pretty great, happy to give this a shot.

which_ones_will Mar 18, 2026 +7
From a comedy standpoint this is no "Last Man on Earth". It's probably more of a crime drama than it is a dark comedy.

D’Arcy is a scene stealer!

chill90ies Mar 18, 2026 +4
Yes she is absolutely incredible! Her acting talent really shined through in good place, playing everybody like that was such a testament to her skills.

expected to love the show but i don’t like it tbh

samthewisetarly Mar 18, 2026 +8
Isn't everything 100% in its first week now?

Summerof5ft6andahalf Mar 18, 2026 +2
It's actually been out for a while now, at least in Australia.

I really want to like this show but after watching episode four last night it’s starting to lose me. The storyline is already a stretch from the beginning. But moving the story forward just keeps depending on circumstances that become less and less believable. I do like the acting. But the story is starting to remind me of the last couple seasons of The Sopranos and I was very ready for that to end by the time it finally did.

Saw the trailer a week or two ago. I didn't realize it was out already. Will definitely be watching very soon. Last Man on Earth ensured I'll check out anything with Will forte in it (other than Macgruber).

Razzler1973 Mar 18, 2026 +6
I'm watching it atm, about halfway through It's pretty enjoyable Not going to be on anyone's bestest show ever list but certainly an enjoyable enough regular people involved in crime stuff show, which can be a fruitful area of entertainment in TV

What is it called when a gay man has a platonic crush on a woman? If it was two straight guys it would be a man-crush...  Anyway, that is what I have for D'Arcy Carden. Always love seeing her in basically anything.

my girlfriend suggested this since Darcy's in good place, I mentioned she was also in Barry so right now I'm introducing her to Barry.

Hadn't heard of it, thanks for sharing!

Thanks but I'll trust the 6.2 on IMDB.

Who cares about the RT score

I watched a couple of episodes and it didn't hit for me at all.
2
WeakEmployment6389 Mar 18, 2026 +2
6.2/10 on imdb, I still plan to check it out but this really shows how unreliable RT is.

Ok_Log_5134 Mar 18, 2026 +2
This is a very good show! It sits nicely on my "funny thriller/suspenseful comedy" shelf with Search Party & Righteous Gemstones. Super well-written, great leads, and a refreshing setting. Hope Stan gives them a second season.

shinyhpno Mar 18, 2026 +2
Bodkin was such a great surprise. Will Forte has some strange quality to his acting that I can't put my finger on.
2
glumanda12 Mar 19, 2026 +1
First half of the season was amazing, second half was unwatchable for me tbh

mormonbatman_ Mar 18, 2026 +2
>twists Carden's character is the stupidest person who has ever been featured in any narrative ever created.

This isn’t on Disney+ in Canada yet and I’m dying. I want to watch it!

Looks like it’s on CTV in Canada?

8 reviews that all give it 51-100%. Renaming that to a simple 100% is marketing genius
2
mikepictor Mar 18, 2026 +1
It's RT. It's just saying that all reviews are generally positive, not that all reviews are 100%
1
BortkiewiczHorse Mar 18, 2026 +1
I had Disney/Hulu last month and they didn’t even push this to my feed! I would have watched it in a heartbeat.

davpel Mar 18, 2026 +1
Only one episode in so far. Please tell me that Claudia O'Doherty returns. She is one of the funniest human beings on earth and makes everything she's in better.
1
Iggy_Pops_Lost_Shirt Mar 18, 2026 +1
Not really worth bringing up RT when something only has 8 reviews
1
Lunaorin Mar 18, 2026 +1
100% on rotten tomatoes and its still flying under the radar nice
1
mc_trigger Mar 18, 2026 +1
Great show, just saw it pop up on Hulu and wanted to see D’arcy as something other than Janet and it’s a really clever comedy. Great writing that ties all these pieces together really cleverly. Please watch it so it gets a season 2 :)

bluemoon71 Mar 18, 2026 +1
Just finished it last night and thought it was great!
1
Negan1995 Mar 18, 2026 +1
Rotten tomatoes scores have become so useless, a show could have 100% and suck or be the next best thing, its simply not a good metric.
1
norsk_imposter Mar 18, 2026 +1
When about is it for international Disney +?
1
OldBirth Mar 18, 2026 +1
Is this kind of Mr Inbetween vibes? Maybe a little lighter in subject matter. Idk I've just been trying to fill that void for years, mate.
1
Aimees-Fab-Feet Mar 18, 2026 +1
I'll definitely watch it, but I'm still mad that last man on earth ceased to exist!!
1
swordfish-ll Mar 18, 2026 +1
100% on rotten tomatoes is now meaningless in my opinion.
1
tape_deck__heart Mar 18, 2026 +1
I enjoyed it, some parts were a little ridiculous but overall a fun show. D’Arcy really steals every scene too
1
SSWBGUY Mar 18, 2026 +1
Watched this, kinda similar to Bad Monkey if you saw that, this was decent
1
Soupedupman Mar 18, 2026 +1
Shhhhh… you had me at Will & D’Arcy.

I hope they sing Falling Slowly. Not just once, but many times.
1
Prussian_Blu Mar 18, 2026 +1
Looks like Will Forte isn't playing "Will Forte" so it might end up being a decent show
1
Glass-Fan111 Mar 19, 2026 +1
Rotten Tomatoes is a terrible way to define what you should or not watch. In other words the worst review-o-meter.
1
Punker1234 Mar 19, 2026 +1
I will watch anything with Will Forte. I know he's not for everyone but I think this dudes comedy is so underrated. I've had too many bell laughs to count from last man on earth alone.
1
peabody624 Mar 19, 2026 +1
6.2 on imdb though
1
Warghzone12 Mar 19, 2026 +1
Why does every show now have the Blue/Orange filter and all so super HD that it looks AI generated
1
Infamous_Curve2682 Mar 19, 2026 +1
Man whoever did the editing for colors on this show did such a bad job :/
1
Massive-Factor-4883 Mar 19, 2026 +1
I love both so much, which made the pilot that much more painful. The writing is so expositional. Characters - siblings! Explaining their backstories to each other to the degree that I thought it might be some sort of meta commentary on bad writing… it wasn’t.
1
Ok_Log_5134 Mar 20, 2026 +1
It's always the screenwriting contest people who have the worst takes on writing.

Isn't it 100% on Hulu?

I was hoping to see D’Arcy Carden show up in more stuff . And I love Will Forte . Will have to check this out !
