Will there ever be another sitcom that will 10 plus seasons?

Posted by Emezlee

I have an unfortunate feeling that The Big Bang Theory was the final sitcom to ever have 10 plus seasons with its historic 12 seasons and 279 episodes back in 2019.

It’s even likely to hit 20 seasons at this point.

It doesn’t even have 200 episodes so no it’s not the longest running sitcom try again!!!

I didn’t say it was the longest running. But name me a sitcom that’s had more than 18 seasons.

i don’t count shows that been on for 10 plus years and yet has less than 200 episodes that kinda defeats the purpose anyone can produce x-amounts of seasons but if it’s only 8 to a season it’s pointless. I say either let them produce 20 episodes a season or don’t have a show at all!!!!!!

Always sunny? Simpsons? bobs burgers, family guy, south park? For ones that aren't there yet: I think a good chance Abbot Elementary gets there

Modern Family ended in 2020 and hit 10 season 1 year after BBT. So I dunno how you could count Big Bang Theory as the final sitcom to have 10 plus seasons when Modern Family did so after it BBT.

Probably not. Young Sheldon was still popular when they reached the end in season 7 but that’s the magic number where from 8 on, has to be renegotiated. Fans assumed the show would continue and be just about the coopers and in a way they did do it but it couldn’t just be a continuation because the cast would have to be paid accordingly. So, instead they picked all the least expensive side characters and reverted back to a cheaper multi cam with a new name so they could start everyone on season 1 pay. Syndication isn’t a money printing press anymore. Everyone is happy just to get to the contracted season 7 (or the magic 88 to 100 episodes at this point).

I think there will be plenty of long-running shows. Most of them will exist on YouTube, TikTok, or some internet platform. Maybe verticals? Comedy for people now exists, for better or worse, in shortform on TikTok and on legacy TV brands. FX making "Sunny," networks making some multi-camera shows here and there. The days of NBC Must See TV are gone. What likely will stay for many seasons will be some network animated sitcom that isn't too costly to produce, but will have a lot of repeatability. It's easy to forget Family Guy and The Simpsons have just been going on for over 27 and 36 years respectively. South Park has been around since the 90's. King of the Hill is back. Beavis and Butthead is still going on into like 11 seasons. Bob's Burgers has 16 seasons. But I think the era of the classic multi-camera theater-style sitcom is likely going to be going by the wayside for now. Unless a streamer wants to use it to retain people with weekly episodes, bring back hiring and production seasons, a network wants to produce shows intended to have long seasons again, or unless cable makes a comeback, I think our current landscape is ripe for people just watching old sitcoms while having other shows have short seasons.

And have more than 10 episodes a season?

crimson_teacup Apr 14, 2026 +1
If anything cracks 10 again, it’ll probably be animated or mockumentary-style. Sunny, Simpsons, South Park prove cockroach-level survivability. Keep an eye on Abbott Elementary, network + awards = longevity fuel.

Quit saying shows with less than 200 episodes is long running while it’s always sonny in Philadelphia has been on the air for 20 plus years, they don’t have even 200 episodes their for its not long running!!!!

Ghosts maybe? It's up to 6 now. The issue comes around 7 seasons when stars get bored or contracts start getting really expensive.

I like Ghosts, but I don’t think they’ll make it that far. I could see them maybe going to 7 but that’s it

There has been less than 20 live action sitcoms to last 10 seasons or more in the 80 year history of American sitcoms. It's not that common, but it can certainly happen again

zowietremendously Apr 14, 2026 +1
Incorrect. I can name 21 quite easily.

If you mean traditional multi camera sitcoms then probably none. It would most likely be a CBS show since they're the only network still putting out multi camera sitcoms. If you're just talking about sitcoms in general there will definitely be some. Like others have mentioned Always Sunny, Bobs Burgers and The Simpsons. I could see Abbott Elementary hitting ten seasons. Technically Scrubs hit ten seasons this season (or a hypothetical next season if you don't want to include season 9).

I could imagine both a new animated series and a new live action sitcom going for ten years. Why not? Every streaming service would like you to pay ten more years. Making you laugh is the most effective way to accomplish that, especially if they go back to a one show per week policy to get word of mouth.

In the US Tyler Perry's House of Payne is on it's 12th season. In India they don't do seasons really. Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is the longest running so far, 4,682 episodes since 2008.

Teen Titans Go literally just got renewed for it's 10th season. There's also shows currently airing in the 10th+ season. Spongebob Squarepants, South Park, It's Always Sunny, Family Guy, The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Malcolm in the Middle.

Not without a will they or won't they arc there won't be.

spinereader81 Apr 14, 2026 +1
I'd be very happy if there weren't. Even best sitcoms are stale by then.

Well, first, The Simpsons is still on at 37 seasons. And Scrubs just came back for season 10. And Modern Famiiy ended at 11 seasons a year after Big Bang Theory. But even beyond those, of course there will be. Sitcoms have relatively inexpensive production values, and really only have to pay to retain the cast. If a show is successful enough, whether on broadcast, cable, or streaming, someone will pay to keep renewing it.

TootieSummers Apr 14, 2026 -2
The Simpsons is an outlier. None of their seasons have been sold into syndication in ages. They keep making it because it’s still popular and if Fox/Disney cancelled it, another network/conglomerate would scoop it up in a heart beat, just to have the name. This Simpsons will probably be the only show on television to ever have this problem.

First off that’s animated it’s not even live action nor is it even a sitcom in even close conversational sense so try again!!!!!
