It's just bizarre in a great way how much Sherlock resonates more than a century later. The RDJ movies made like half a billion dollars a decade ago. The BBC series used to have record ratings at its peak in the UK and elsewhere and was massive. And this show seems to be successful too. And we have had countless Sherlock adaptations. What a creation Doyle made.

Sherlock Holmes has to be up there as one of the most instantly recognisable pop culture figures, right? The phrase "no shit, Sherlock" is something you just know and understand even if you've never read Doyle's work (which is most people). Show someone in that hat and pipe and it's immediately obvious who they are.

yeah sherlock indeed has to be one of the top 10-20 most famous and well known fiction characters ever. And it's incredible to see because he is a detective and the OG books have not been published since a century or so. And yet he continues to hold his charm on audiences.

Honour Arthur Conan Doyle sometime the way he would have wanted: reading his other books.

Doyle would probably get along with Harrison Ford based purely on their disdain for the most popular characters associated with them.

He’s the most ever adapted literary character on stage, film and television. That’s a verifiable record.
I don’t you could ever quantify/verify this, but I would guess he’s also the fictional character whom the largest number of people erroneously believe was actually a real person.

The RDJ movies worked because RDJ AND Guy Ritchie AND Jude Law. Can’t stress how much I enjoyed the alchemy with a badass Watson.

If you enjoyed this I'd strongly recommend Moriarty the Patriot as well. Short, but damn is it good, real good.

Cool
I enjoyed the interplay between Sherlock and Moriarty. Especially the way Moriarty is being portrayed over the typical ‘evil genius’ trope (he is that deep down but is more of a cad with no real moral constraints and a bit of rogue)
‘Would you please not flirt with my mother in front of me?’ and ‘Well I wouldn’t kick her out of bed for eating biscuits.’ got me cackling.
Moriarty taking the piss at Sherlock is one of the better relationships of the famed rivals I have seen. He really can’t help himself and enjoys it immensely.

The only problem I have with Moriarty is how much I like him. So whoever they get to play Watson if they go that route eventually, has to be better than Moriarty and Jude Law for me, lol.

No need to be embarrassed! I am a middle aged adult woman and found it very entertaining. I really enjoyed the Holmes-Moriarty pairing, although we kind of see Moriarty becoming evil toward the end, so Season 2 should be good!

> I’m not embarrassed to say that as an adult man
It's not a kids show. It's rated for teens and up, and there is blood, violence, and death.
The "young" in the title just refers to the fact that it's supposed to be about Sherlock Holmes when he was first starting out. More of an origin story.
There is no reason to expect embarrassment from adult viewers.

I enjoyed it but this wasn’t the Sherlock you’d expect. This is just a charming, smart guy, not true to the stories… but it doesn’t have to be to make it fun.

There are actually young Sherlock books, just not by Doyle. The show is based veeeerrry loosely on them, as in I think they just wanted the name.

Oh I now that, and I get it. But to come up with the personality he has in the stories you don’t “just become like that”, you are born like that.
This guy was way too charming, too outgoing to be the Sherlock from the stories. Again, it doesn’t have to be, and I enjoyed it. But I did expect more in the way of Doyle’s style of crime solving

It's just too similar a name to Youg Sheldon. Every time I see it my mind immediately go s to Young Sheldon
Has the exact same thought and ignored all news about it until a family member recommended it to me. Unfortunate naming in my opinion, but considering how popular BBT was maybe it helped more than it hurt?

Except Young Sherlock isn't a new concept. There was a movie called "Young Sherlock Holmes" in the 1980s as well as a book series starting in the 2010s.

Oh yeah, I think this current series is actually loosely based on the books? But I would argue neither of them have had the reach that BBT has, so here we are 🤷♂️

The first episode sold me dreams. Really thought it'd be a fun episodic show of Sherlock and Moriarty in university. I got through it all but the show never quite recaptured the quality of the first episode, and this is one I didn't think needed a connected season long mystery. It quickly ran out of steam when they left the university in my opinion.
13
PopDownBlockerApr 15, 2026
+1
Yeah, I was hoping for a different mystery in each episode.
Instead, what we got was a single mystery over the first 4 episodes and then a drawn-out resolution over the remaining 4 episodes.
I still enjoyed the show, but it definitely felt more like one super-long movie than an episodic TV series.
Since it was 8 episodes, I wish they had done four 2-part stories, where the first episode introduces a mystery and ends on a cliffhanger, and then the following episode is the mystery-solving conclusion.
I think that would've been more fun, but since all the episodes were released at the same time, I don't think they cared about building suspense from episode to episode.

Hero’s acting was a miss for me. But the actor playing Moriarty simply nailed the role.
1
TerribleCashewApr 15, 2026
+3
In fairness to Hero, they really didn't give him much to work with. Moriarty's characterization and dialogue is infinitely better and actually refreshing compared to other portrayals of the character. I don't think any actor could make this Sherlock stand out.
It's like asking the cast of the Star Wars prequels to give world class performances. You just can't with that writing.

The Doyles shouldn't see any cash, because they had nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle had, and he died a long time ago.
