If Belarus joins the war, what will be the effects of that? Will Belarus face internal resistance? Will Ukraine be able to hold them off in addition to Russia? Will anyone in Europe help Ukraine?

Im no expert but i think there will be internal resistance. From what i gather some Belorussians are in the mindset of well its better to be under russia and live in peace than under eu and probably be invaded by russia or draged into war. Are there enough people who would revolt? Who knows.. there are plenty of russophiles there. I wouldn't hold my breath on them leaving russias lap. Eu is already helping, will eu send troops? Nah. Maybe up the long range missiles or something like that but won't join outright.

I got the impression they were expected (by Russia) to enter the war to aid them from the beginning, then internal resistance caused Lukashenko to back off. I don't imagine the internal resistance to entering a grinding attrition war that Russia is really struggling with would be *less* than entering a 'one week special military operation to help repel nazis'.

Good observation, but i will say the crackdown in Belarus was apparently effective, a large portion of the opposition is either in jail or has fled Belarus entirely, so it may be different this time around. that being said, i do think it will be extremely unpopular among the Belorussian elite, they have already seen what Putin's war has done to Russia's economy and I imagine they want no part of it.

Belarus has a government in exile aligned against Lukashenko and the people there generally view him as a corrupt dictator. He's willing to throw dissenters into prison for life, but I suspect the prospect of dying on the Ukrainian front would be enough for major protests again and appeals to Russia for police to suppress them will just lead to more unrest. It's one thing to live out your life under a dictator when you can survive and get by vs. being thrust into certain death.

AK_Panda Apr 18, 2026 +5
That's, and IIRC there's a range of units fighting for Ukraine who came from Belarus who would be quite *enthusiastic* about taking a crack at Lukashenko

Silentkindfromsauna Apr 18, 2026 +4
They’re already revolting at the Lukashenko rule periodically, a war would definitely not cause them to revolt less

ExtremeMuffin Apr 18, 2026 +12
Poland has previously threatened to join the war if Belarus does. It would be a big escalation.
12
cury Apr 18, 2026 +21
They have a population of 10 mln people. The only thing Putin wants is more meat for the grinder so he can have more time to use his foreign assets in the WH to get some kind of an international recognized win.
21
hoishinsauce Apr 18, 2026 +14
Belarusians don't want to die for Russia. There will be massive resistance and very risky for the ruling regime. Not sure if Poland or Finland would be willing to put boots on the ground to help defend Ukraine against Belarus.
14
YakResident_3069 Apr 18, 2026 +6
Yea Poland on its border would react somehow. Someway.
6
WeedInTheKoolaid Apr 18, 2026 +2
I don't see the Finns sending troops, at least not many. They have a smaller population than either Poland or Belarus, plus a massive land border that they have to defend themselves. Maybe a tactical or small unit here and there to get some special experience/ training. Hardware - wise, totally different story. Finland is sending some great tech into the combat zone for real world testing. Poland would be my first guess as to troops entering Ukraine to fight for them, should things escalate.

Felczer Apr 18, 2026 +2
Politically I doubt this would happen it would be a political suicide
2
True-Tip-2311 Apr 18, 2026 +12
Hold them off? Ukraine will just start droning the shit out their military and other infrastructure, maybe send some Himars to clear the gathered forces near the border. It will be fairly quick and painful. We are aware of all the important locations to hit, belarus is a small country.

UnidentifiedBlobject Apr 18, 2026 +4
Ukraine made a bunch of security agreements with other countries so Belarus joining the war against Ukraine will trigger rapid security assistance (weapons delivery, intelligence sharing, ammunition) .

spankpaddle Apr 18, 2026 +2
Wtf is this reply
2
Bpax94 Apr 18, 2026 +2
My first question is would anyone in Belarus help?? Imagine you’re a soldier in Belarus watching under supported Russians getting blown up by drones for 3 years, then you get the order to march toward the border for support. How enthusiastic are you going to be?

nimdull Apr 18, 2026 -2
It opens the north front, means that Ukraine need to fight on all sides. Simple speaking they don't have the manpower to defend Ukraine. Not to mention Kiev is not that fair from Belarus border. But it will not happen. If Belarus join the war, it will destabilise the whole east part of Europe. Poland and Baltic countries would need to react, even join the war. For putin to lose Belarus is to lose ester Europe.
-2
in5idious Apr 18, 2026 +1
No, Ukraine doesn't need to 'fight on all sides', even in this hypothetical situation. Poland is on the 'left side'. Belarus was the RU launching point for their convoy to take Kyiv. How'd that work out?

godzillabobber Apr 18, 2026 +1
More young men as cannon fodder.

Affectionate_Oven_77 Apr 18, 2026 +46
Sounds like desperation
46
Weak-Subject9376 Apr 18, 2026 -239
>desperation Meh, we're forgetting Russia isn't even using its army since it's not an actual war, it's a "special operation." If they actually used their entire military (1 mill or so?) it would be a wholeee 'nother story for Ukraine (inclusive of the billions they're getting of your tax dollars)
-239
gottagohype Apr 18, 2026 +87
You think Russia isn't using its army? They have hurled a million men into the meat grinder. They have emptied their stocks of soviet tanks and armor. You can view the satellite photos of empty storage lots. You can read the names of the dead. The Russian military is fighting for its life.

JaVelin-X- Apr 18, 2026 +48
they have no tires and can't breed the donkeys quick enough
48
Affectionate_Oven_77 Apr 18, 2026 +71
What weird copium from you. They have already deployed as many as possible. They have ~1.3m active duty, of which 700K are on the front lines. Having such a high percentage of troops on the front lines is stretching yourself way too thin. Russia is starting to fall apart and it is glorious.

useless-bloke Apr 18, 2026 +17
Hahahhahaah you tool.
17
Hulkodium Apr 18, 2026 +25
We're on Year Four of the Three Day Special Military Operation. Ukraine has previously occupied parts of Russia, half their oil refineries are on fire, there's been a major putsch from a mercenary group and a lot of dead.
25
-_GIZMO_ Apr 18, 2026 +22
Lol that one mill or whatever is there to keep russia from falling apart and revolting, Putin ain't going to send his security guards to the meat grinder unless its very very desperate.
22
DeadlyGreed Apr 18, 2026 +4
To be fair the Wagner basically walked into Moscow without resistance, because there's no troops to resist them. There's no 1mil personal guard anymore. They are weaker than it seems.
4
Mountain_rage Apr 18, 2026 +19
... Conscription is not even keeping up with losses... Russia loves the meat grinder, craves death instead of living in their homeland in peace. Takes 10 Russians to kill 1 Ukranian... But then again, you are probably drunk and stupid....
19
Mr_Nobody0 Apr 18, 2026 +6
Looks like russian propaganda is working well
6
Layshkamodo Apr 18, 2026 +5
On the tax dollars, not all of this funding goes directly to the Ukrainian government. Much of the aid is allocated for military support and activities related to the war, with a substantial portion spent within the United States itself. So, much of those billions of tax dollars is being pumped back into the US economy by paying the weapon manufacturers workers, combat trainers, and other Americans who are part of the supply chain.
5
Blunt552 Apr 18, 2026 +7
It wouldn't. Their current sorry excuse of an army is heavily under equipped, what do you want the rest to do? Fistfight? Furthermore whos then left to defend Russia when someone else invades because someone with double digit IQ decided it was a smart idea to send the entire army away?
7
The_Sideboob_Hour Apr 18, 2026 +5
Lol yeah, totally. The reason why Russia can't beat Ukraine is obviously because they're not trying and if they actually bothered to use their "real" army then it would be over quickly. Then ask yourself, why haven't they? How is this meat grinder strategy with 1.3 million casualties a better option?
5
Portmanteau_that Apr 18, 2026 +59
Lol Lukashenko you little c*** holster
59
thomasthetanker Apr 18, 2026 +29
It could be argued that Belarus let 30k Russian soldiers come in for a 'training exercise' that was really the invasion of Ukraine, so Belarus has actually been part of the war anyway.
29
drdillybar Apr 18, 2026 +5
NATO 'training' Easy. /s.
5
JohnGabin Apr 18, 2026 +6
We can be happy I guess that until now Lukashenko resisted to enter the war. Hé’s probably not really confident to be followed though
6
lexahiq Apr 18, 2026 +16
Belarusian army is a joke All they train there is how to paint grass. Bullying each other etc
16
stuttufu Apr 18, 2026 +11
They are living meat and for Putin is enough right now.

Angryfunnydog Apr 18, 2026 +4
Actually not that much, due to war a lot of worksplaces emptied and a lot of Belarusians went to work into Russia for better paycheck and to occupy these vacant places. So there’s not a lot of noticeable changes due to lowering of workforce. It’s like communicating vessels - they’re already really close. Plus Belarus has fewer sanctions on them so it’s easier to do business through Belarus Strategically it makes more sense to keep Belarus out of the war to lift sanctions gradually and to have convenient loophole. It doesn’t really make much sense to drag them into a war, it will not bring a lot of forces on the table and it will close existing loopholes, it’s more convenient for Russia to keep things how they are as either way the war is a stalemate at the moment
4
Raket0st Apr 18, 2026 +4
The wildcard is the reports that the stalemate is slowly turning in Ukraine's favor. If Russia fears a collapse of part of its frontline or believes Ukraine is stretched too thin to handle Belarus entering the war, it could make sense to get Belarus involved to force Ukraine off balance. It is a short sighted move, with all the risks you outlined, but Russia has repeatedly shown that it lacks long term planning in Ukraine.
4
Angryfunnydog Apr 18, 2026 +2
There are reports of some successes from both sides, but the frontline is mostly unchanged - like here Ukrainians got some space - and here Russians got some space, this is going on like this for at least the last 1.5 years and yeah, while there are some reports of shifts, but until there are some real changes and for some prolonged period of time (it's pretty frequent to get some position only to be pushed back in 5 days or smth) - it's not real news. If the frontline will be falling - then yeah, they will make desperate moves, but nobody knows when and if that happens. That's why both sides bargaining a lot, really difficult to move somewhere in both directions
2
stuttufu Apr 18, 2026 +1
I wasn't aware. Makes sense!
1
badcatdog42 Apr 18, 2026 +3
Has Putin made Lukashenko a colonel yet?
3
66stang351 Apr 18, 2026 +9
Not worth worrying about. No army can waltz into this war and do anything except take huge casualties. If it happens it might honestly be a boon for Ukraine, long term
9
Eckanati64 Apr 18, 2026 +5
What does Belarus even do other than being a Russian Puppet?
5
Kobra_Zer0 Apr 18, 2026 +2
If Belarus sends missiles from their territory like in the past Ukraine should respond in kind and blow them up.
2
IdiotBOT1234 Apr 18, 2026 +4
It will trigger armed insurrection in Belarus
4
Flat-Double3566 Apr 18, 2026 +2
Then he'll need to arm Belarusians. And it's hardly a wise choice in a country where the vast majority is against you
2
Tamsta-273C Apr 18, 2026 +1
Belarus have already lot of people in Poland and Lithuania/Latvia, some for work some for study, joing the war would mean total isolation for them. There is already sanctions, and the governments don't even hide the enmity.
1
bomzay Apr 18, 2026 +1
Pretty sure the Ukrainians would immediately aid the long overdue revolution and Lukashenko would be done within a week. Uavs would bomb the hell out of the security forces and army and that would be it.
1
TheTreeDweller Apr 18, 2026
I wonder if Poland would be happy to undertake a special operation in Belarus
0
SuperToiletDelux Apr 18, 2026 +1
There are entire brigades of Belarusians fighting for Ukraine. They have more experience then the entire Belarusian army.
1
mixxituk Apr 18, 2026 +1
They desperate enough to let their allies Iran and the Old Syria get battered by trump who interestingly also works for them and now need to bring Belarus Optics couldn't get any more desperate
1
Glum-Breadfruit-6421 Apr 18, 2026 +2
Belarus shouldn’t take Zelensky’s warning lightly. Ask the Wagner group in Africa how that worked out for them. Oh, nobody left to ask, sorry.
2
m0llusk Apr 18, 2026 +1
Belarus citizens really don't want that and if Lukashenko pushes too hard they will eat him.
1
Difficult_Bad1064 Apr 18, 2026 +1
I think that military aged Belarusians probably have quite a negative view of Russia, due to willfully poisoning them with the fallout from Chernobyl.
1
UnluckyPluton Apr 18, 2026 +1
If Belarus really accepts stepping into the war, call it Russia at this point.
