well that's certainly a reply to moscow warning diplomats to leave kyiv.

I thought Russia already did that at the start of the war.

Top level trolling, regardless of Ukraine's actions. There's gonna be some nervous people in red square tomorrow.

Zelenskyy should post a past photo of Putin watching a parade from Lenin's tomb with the caption: "Many Russians have unexpectedly fallen from great heights over the past four years."

It‘s also just economic pressure since if they want to hold the parade, they’ll have to spend a ton of money on it and if they don’t, it’ll be quite the hit to their morale and undermine their propagandists spouting how well it is going. Win/win, really.

Would be a great opportunity for some PSYOPs, drop some leaflets on the other major cities telling the residence that their dear leader has deemed his parade more important than their lives and that these could have been bombs but we don't kill civilians. Then blow the shit out of all the military hardware, defence industry and ports
170
im_dead_sirius 5 days ago +69
Drones dropping yellow and blue paintballs would do the trick.
69

Way more expensive than leaflets when done in big numbers

Steve Seagull just being like "aw man I'd love to be at that parade but I just cant. You understand." Then he puts it in the mail because Russia has no Internet and Vladimir Vladimirobich doesn't use computers.

"To biographer Michael D’Antonio, Trump went further still, arguing in 2015 that he’d been the best athlete in every sport at the New York Military Academy. He added that he’d decided against a baseball career because “in those days you couldn’t even make any money being a great baseball player.” At this point, the claims were all Trump’s. But about a month after Trump announced he was running for president in the summer of 2015, the NYMA coach that Trump mentioned in his tweet, Theodore Dobias, chimed in. Dobias told the Daily Mail that Trump was scouted by the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies, and repeated to Rolling Stone that the Phillies had been interested. “He was quite the athlete,” Dobias said, going on to praise the future president’s cleanliness and his ability to get along with everyone." https://slate.com/culture/2020/05/donald-trump-baseball-high-school-nyma.html

Would be hilarious if Ukraine makes everyone so afraid that nobody attends. Then they don't strike the parade anyway.
7
qwertyqyle 5 days ago +9
Certainly, they will have tons of jammers blocking anything of coming within a few miles. Right?
9
devi83 5 days ago +21
jammers don't block onboard neural nets
21
qwertyqyle 5 days ago +5
Umm, can you explain that like I am 5?
5
devi83 5 days ago +31
The jammer stops radio signals, GPS, that kind of stuff, because those are from an outside source, and so they can over power those signals with their own signals. An onboard neural net is different, because it doesn't need outside signals to fly, it uses its own AI trained on navigation and target acquisition, and all that exists inside the drone. So there is nothing to jam.
31
qwertyqyle 5 days ago +6
Like a set-and-forget type of thing? Isn't there like an electronics jammer though, that just fries the circuits, making it fall out of the sky?
6
Derrickful 5 days ago +18
So fry everything in Moscow to drop a drone?
18
qwertyqyle 5 days ago +5
I mean, I am talking out my ass here, cause I don't know what is out there. I just assumed there would be a targeted gun thing that fries electronics. I can imagine in my head what it would do, but I just lack the knowledge to know how it would work or if it already exists.
5
BiggerCabbage 5 days ago +6
Practically speaking, there is no such thing that can affect mundane military hardening.
6
Colbert2020 5 days ago +2
If you can aim at a drone with a gun to jam it, you can aim at it with a gun that can just destroy it.
2
YouSmellSumthin 5 days ago +8
What you're talking about does exist, but it's a much more directed-energy type of thing. If they only have 2 of those defensive tools, but drones approach from 3 or 4 different general directions, you're SoL. More akin to just shooting them down rather than pushing a big wide wave of jamming
8
Yodl007 5 days ago +2
That is just EMP then ...
2
devi83 5 days ago +3
Microwave beams could do it yes. They gotta detect it first, and its not giving off radio signals, so that means it can fly really low and carefully to avoid radar and visual detection means, and if they can't see it, they can't aim a microwave or laser beam at it.
3
canspop 5 days ago +6
Have you not seen the reports of drones in moscow this last week? They already penetrated 3 layers of 'impenetrable' air defence around the capital.
6
r2002 5 days ago +2
It would be hilarious if Putin pulled all defensive resources to defend this stupid parade, leaving other much higher value military targets open for attack.
2
Colbert2020 5 days ago +4
Russia has limited defenses against the drone strikes from Ukraine. They have been launching a campaign against refineries this year. Russia's vast geography, which was an advantage against invasion, is working against them with these kinds of attacks. They do not have the resources to prevent drones from crossing anywhere across their borders and thus have to spread their defenses out. The parade is another additional resource they have to guard. This is a no-win scenario for Russia. The anti-drone defenses he has will be weak somewhere and if Ukraine has the proper intel, they will be able to exploit it.
4
r2002 5 days ago +1
Do you know if the Russian population is generally aware of these drone strikes? Or has Putin been able to hide them from his people?
1
Little_Noodles 4 days ago +1
I’d assume that, even if no drones even attempt to target the parade, the knowledge that they could and the visible security that requires is, in itself, a pretty obvious hit.

Sounds like the Ukraine's fireworks will be on the parade after all. Shame I won't be there to witness it though.
9
gordonjames62 5 days ago +2
I really want to see them pull air defences back to Moscow, only to have oil refineries light up the sky. Probably not great for CO2 and climate change, but I won't begrudge them these fires.

Ukraine successfully striking the parade would be massive loss of face for russia. Will be interesting to see what Ukraine does. Will they strike the parade, or use the opportunity for other targets since russia has almost certainly moved lot of air defence to cover moscow, exposing other areas.
2
Colbert2020 5 days ago +2
It's hard to say how successful it would be. We have seen the effect of indiscriminate attacks on civilians from countries like Israel and Russia and how it turns the wider world against them. Maybe you think: "Who cares?" but these things do matter especially when Ukraine relies on support from Western nations to continue its war effort. If Ukraine had the opportunity to do widespread death and destruction in the parade, I don't think they would. But even exploding one bomb during their parade would cause panic and humiliate Putin.
2

That's one advantage that drones have brought to warfare. It has turned dictators like Putin into a groundhog. They hide underground and are terrified every time they pop their head above ground.

juicy_meat_legs 5 days ago +1
so who thinks ukraine will attack the parade?
1
Consistent_Catch9917 5 days ago +11
Don't think so, but its the ideal situation to attack other key targets in Russia as Moscow probably will have weakened its air defenses elsewhere to protect the parade.
11
Tuigh-van-den-righel 5 days ago +2
I don't. There is nothing really worthy of attacking. No hardware, just marching troops who are worth a few hours of kills on the frontlines. It would have a averse effect, Moscow would be forced to retaliate massively and it would probbaly up the approval rates for the war amongst Russians, it's a very important and symbolic day for them, max patriotism. Getting the parade canceled though, that would be such a massive insult and flex.

i doubt it. even the allies would look at that with disdain (it is a parade to celebrate the end of WW2). and Putin might use that to bombard even harder Kyiv. he won't go for nukes, but he legit might unleash his stashed arsenal on Ukraine as retalliation. Russia might be okay with some war of attriction for now, but bombing a parade, in the middle of Moscow, might just be the last insult Putin would accept.
-10
androshalforc1 5 days ago +10
I agree that Ukraine is not likely to attack the parade directly. They would probably be willing to attack other military targets in moscow that can be seen from the parade grounds. However if you still think russia has a cache of the good troops and or equipment that they have been holding back on that’s just laughable. russia was all in from the start, and now they’re on the verge of collapse. If they even have nukes anymore they’re probably afraid to even try them in case they end up blowing up in their faces.

You get the military part in military parade? I guess soldiers and war machines seem like very good targets for a preventive strike of a defender. Does not matter if they are in a base, on the battlefield or nicely lined up and sorted in a parade.... Why do I even bother.... Ah well...
